Day 3 - Old Delhi

Mar 16, 2012 14:51

Quick summary as my internet time for now is running out:
Breakfast this morning another strange but fascinating mixture of German and Indian.  I ws keen to try idli with a sort of dhal and coconut chutney, followed by pancakes, bacon and maple syrup :)
Then we were off again in the coach to see Old Delhi: Fantastic mad streets with bonkers cabling, sugar cane juicing machines, all manner of stalls...especially in Chandni Chowk where we saw a small Hindu religious procession, but we weren't allowed to get off the coach and experience it all first hand :(  We're being a bit protected on this tour, am wondering whether I should have gone with The Adventure Company instead...
The Friday Mosque: Everyone except me had to wear a flowery robe.  Guide reckoned I got away with it because I look like an Indian lady, but I think I was just wearing a long skirt!  The mosque is a large open courtyard with a facade to one side, there is nothing inside.  I am wondering why everything we've seen so far has been Muslim... it's all the Moghuls' fault I guess.
Gandhi's cremation site: very peaceful
Carpet shop: Kashmiri hand-twisted carpets, gorgeous, accidentally bought one for $$$$, ooops!
After that whistle-stop tour we set off for the long drive to Agra.  I was still exhausted and fell asleep for a while but took some photos of colourful buses and cows and piles of cow-dung for fuel.
Run out of time now... more later... I'm off for a snooze :)
