pets

I would like some sort of pet.  I was originally looking at turtles, but they actually involve more money and upkeep than I thought.
Alec is refusing anything except fish (the most boring of all pets).
I would like something that lives (at least most of the time) on land.  Not a mammal because we don't want to put down a pet deposit and small mammals stink.  I considered little tree frogs or something because you can keep them in a reasonably small cage, but Alec insisted that they either creep him out or were gross.  I don't want a snake, spider, scorpion, or centipede (all of which were suggested on-line, gross).
Obviously, I would love a cat but that isn't feasible right now.
So, can anyone think of small, fairly easy amphibians or reptiles?
Does anyone have suggestions about cool fish (not salt-water, too much of a pain)?  (this would appease alec and would therefore be the easiest to muster).
I would prefer a pet that you could take out of its cage and at least watch walk around, but one which isn't bigger than like 8 inches long, tops.
Or does anyone have any ideas on how to convince alec that frogs/lizards/hermit crabs are adorable pets he would love to keep?

We do have access to many fish tanks for free (including a huge 60 gallon one we couldn't fit in out apartment, but will keep in mind for future pets), I'm willing to invest at least some money, but I don't want a pet that only eats whale soaked in gold or something.

If I'm being completely unreasonable, please let me know.

All suggestions/ advise would be lovely.
Thanks guys!
