Whelp, LJ has dun messed up good. I don't think I'd notice or care so much if I weren't so much in the roleplay scene, because I wouldn't have even heard details. As it is I think I could cope, even though the fact it's bandwidth heavy is bad because it'll eat my phone data like woah (I'm relying on my phone wifi for Internet nowadays) and I'm ( Read more... )

They're not going to bring back the preview or subject lines, or as yet have no intention to, I don't think-unless you count the apparent S2 'workaround.' That's why they gave every account the ability to edit their comments. A staff member also commented on the subject line's dismal likelihood of actually coming back into the main style. I can link you to it if you'd like to read it. Igrick (who is the "epitome" of professionalism if you haven't heard about him yet) seems to also intend to get rid of the subject line in S2 later, and just redesign the entirety of LJ. The best part is he's been the Head of LJ Russia for not even three months, from what I understand ( ... )

Oh I've heard of him alright. I haven't actually seen the posts where he went off at people, but I've heard enough to go 'good fucking Lord, mate, take the pole out of your ass'. >.> I'd heard something about subject lines coming back in the S2 workaround, but I honestly don't understand the whole S1 vs S2 layouts thing, so my mind kinda just skipped over that part. Gotcha; sucks a lot balls, this situation does.

Same. The Once Upon A Time dressingroom has already been made ready to import once Dreamwidth can import communities and Bete Noire has been tossing around the idea, though that's not going to be settled until we've seen just what LJ is going to do with all this. At this point, even given how lazy I am, I'd almost welcome the move so we didn't have to deal with the shit anymore. What I'm really worried about is if we'd lose the comms and everything we left behind on LJ; I like going back to reread and it's kind of a necessity when you don't take CR notes. Then again, the import option will hopefully include being able to ( ... )

Oh, I agree with you. There's a lot of stuff/members that will be lost if the move is done, regardless if the move is ultimately for the best. I imagine they will be able to import everything (though considering how massive some of those RPs are, I hope it doesn't break DW). Though they'll be kind of messed regardless, due to the fact userpics probably won't import, though everything else probably will.

And yeah, I like my preview and my subject lines. The bandwidth issue is especially nasty for people on your end. I don't have a bandwidth problem (though the internet will get throttled slightly, and a slowdown noticed), but it's nothing compared to people like you who operate on their phones or have a bandwidth cap on their internet.

Oh damn, the icons will be changed, won't they? Well, icons aren't so important when it comes to rereading, though I agree reverting to default is a pain and takes something out of the thread. Makes me wonder how the site would handle journals that just don't exist on Dreamwidth yet/ever--whether they'll just look like deleted journals or if the comments just won't be there. And that's if, as you say, it doesn't break the server.

Here's hoping they've thought of all this stuff, because otherwise crap, importing might not be as good an option as it sounds like. Judging by their responses so far I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it's still a bit worrying.

Ironically, I haven't noticed any slowdown at all compared to others--my wifi is excellent in terms of speed. I was already predicting paying through the nose this month, though, so a new layout that makes that worse ... yeeeep, no thanks.

The community import? I believe it'll function just like the journal importing, and look pretty much exactly like this. It's basically converting the comments into OPENID, so the original owners of the comments still have control over them, etc. Just... no icons.

I actually don't know what OPENID is either, but that's good to know, cheers! Assuming that it says [journal name] instead of [anonymous], of course, because that could be a pain. Still, at least we'll still have the threads, even if some of those things are gone.

... I now find myself somewhat glad my activity chart never got longer than a year's worth of activity, because redoing it would require a lot of new hyperlinking.

Oh, it will. If you go further down on the linked page, there are examples of logged in comments. The anonymous were all ready anonymous at the original page. I'm not too familiar with OPENID and what it entails either, but you can sort of see it in action there?

And I totally know what you mean. Keeping up CR and activity charts. So much effort. This is precisely why I fail to keep one up to date. Though on the issue of changing hyperlinks, why modify them unless the game gets deleted? Linking to the original threads would let them see the icons and everything in its original context.

Oh yep, I see, cheers!

It really is. Especially when you started late like me. XD I did have a CR chart, once, but I got lazy with maintaining it and html scares me. That is true, though; I just like keeping everything self-contained.

Where are you playing nowadays?

Mainly just Luceti and random threads in Memebells. Used to be in more (was in Hometrail and Damned for awhile), but university life tends to screw up how much time I have to RP nowadays.

University does tend to have that effect, but then, a lot of things do. Too bad; hopefully you'll get a little more time in the future.
