SPEAK UP....BY STAYING SILENT

Apr 25, 2007 09:29

Today, I'm participating in Drew U. 's Day of Silence (dayofsilence.org).  It's a time to reflect on the social ostracization that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals have faced in years past, and the oppression that they still deal with.  To me, the Day of Silence is a very emotional time to remember how painful the closet felt...what it was like to be afraid to go to school...how I almost got fired from Curtin's...the time Tyler and I were harassed for holding hands...the look on my mother's face when she told me she was sorry that I could never get married.

This year, Drew's Day of Silence will protest all forms of hate and prejudice, including racial, ethnic, religious, gender, income, and more.  We all deserve to inhabit this Earth.  Why don't we make it safe for all of us?

Stop by the U.C. and get a patch.  Keep the vow of silence if possible.  If nothing else, remember how it feels to not fit in.  Remember what it's like to be bullied and harassed.  Remember what it's like to find acceptance.  Because we've all experienced enough hate in our lifetimes.  Let's get rid of it!
