Who: Genesis and Rikku When: After Genesis' first entry. Where: Clocktower. Rating: PG. Warnings: None. Summary: Rikku taking Genesis back to his "old home".
Genesis' ears pricked up at the footsteps, he turned around just as Rikku called out to him. He was extremely surprised - although his expression did not show it - at the sheer joy on her face. He gazed at the blonde, sharp eyes drifting over her features, her eyes shining with excitement, her lips curved up in the biggest smile he'd ever seen. Was this all because of him? He had to wonder how it was possible that just the mere sight of a person could make one so happy...as happy as Rikku seemed to be.
He'd hoped that something would return to him when he saw the girl. Some memory, some feeling, something - anything, that indicated that what she said was right. That he had known her once upon a time, that they had been friends. He took another look as she came closer, eyes burning with intensity and almost a kind of desperation as he tried to remember...but no, there was nothing there.
No feelings, no flicker of recognition, nothing. His mind came to a complete blank. He could not place her, could not remember ever seeing her before. A small part of him was disappointed. He berated himself mentally, for hoping. Hope led to disapointment. It was better to not expect anything.
Genesis nodded slightly in acknowledgment. "Rikku."
She saw it there in his eyes, that he was at least trying to remember her. That was enough, for the moment. Because if he had been her friend once, if they had made it work already, there was no reason why it couldn't work again. Simplifying life was just easier sometimes, especially when the alternative was accepting the fact that people she had grown to love were leaving, coming back, and not knowing who the hell she was.
Straightforward was much, much easier.
The thief skidded to a halt a few feet away, opting to walk the rest of the way instead of run. Spiraled green eyes sized him up; it didn't look as if anything with fangs had gotten a hold of him yet. That was always a plus. She paused right in front of him, still grinning widely. That smile hadn’t been present in Shiva knew how long, but she could mentally list a few people who would love to see it.
"Good to see you again, Genesis. Not that it's again for you, but that's alright. S'not the first time it's happened." Her tone was enthusiastic, charming. It was the voice she used when she wanted people to like her. She knew how cranky Genesis could get, and she didn’t want to ruin their re-meeting by putting him in a bad mood.
"Hn," A non committal reply, then after a few moments, "Not the first time it's happened? In my case, you mean?"
If that was true, then he had to wonder how many times it had happened before or if he'd even regained his memories on those occasions.
He was wary of her, not wanting to get too involved too soon. He wasn't sure what she wanted exactly, what she was expecting. Things to turn back to the way they once were before? If that was the case, then she'd be disappointed. Maybe they could form some sort of friendship - it would take time, but it wasn't impossible - though he doubted that it would ever be the same as it once was. Mainly because he couldn't remember what their friendship had been like.
It was like rediscovering the type of person you'd been from someone else. It left him with a confused, almost empty feeling. He didn't like it.
She thought on that for a second, rocking back and forth on her heels. "The first time you disappeared and came back, you remembered everything," she said ponderously. "You were just at home for a few months, though only out of Purgatorium for three days or so. And then you disappeared again, and here you are now." It was odd, how she catalogued her time in Purgatorium by who left when and who came back. The first time Genesis had left was around the same time the third Gippal--the one she had ended up loving--had disappeared.
The thief tried not to think about that too hard as she looped her arm with the redhead's and began leading him in the general direction of his old house. She knew he wasn't a big fan of physical contact, but she was willing to accept rejection, if he offered it. It wouldn't bother her in the least; she was used to it.
"I can't take you to your place on the Upper Level," she explained. "You haven't been here near long enough. But I can show you where you and Angeal hung out when you visited this Level." Some would wonder why Rikku had never bothered to move up; Shiva knew she had been in Purgatorium for more than enough time to do so. But her garage was on the bottom level, and she didn't feel like hauling all her machina up those damn stairs.
He had remembered everything? Genesis could only hope that that would be the case this time too. But a small part of him told him not too expect too much. If he did somehow miraculously regain his memories, he would be greatful for it. Especially since that way, he could try and understand and attempt to piece together his time and events here before he had disappeared. Genesis also had to wonder how he'd managed to get back home, then end up here again. Was it really just the gods playing him around for their own amusement or had he - and even Angeal, possibly - figured out a way to leave this place? That was something he may never know, if he didn't regain his memories.
"I see," he sighed inwardly, the wariness he had felt when he first arrived, only increasing thanks to what had taken place.
Genesis stopped and stiffened as Rikku looped her arm through his. His training had taught him to anticipate most things, but that was something he hadn't expected. Lines of tension shot up his spine, moving across his shoulders and down to his arms. He stiffly, silently removed his arm from Rikku's, not bothering to give her an explanation. If they had indeed been friends before like she had claimed, then she would understand. If not, then... He began walking again, hoping that Rikku would do so too.
Upper Level? He'd heard people mention that before. Supposedly, you had to ask the gods for permission to be granted access. Right now, he didn't really care. Any place was fine. It was strangely comforting to be heading to the place where he and Angeal and once lived. He wondered whether Rikku lived on the Upper Level. It seemed likely, since she'd obviously been here for quite a while. He refrained from asking however, preferring to just continue walking.
