"Gaah, shut up!" Naruto retorted on reflex, beaming despite himself. "Who locks their doors when they're home, anyway?!"

He failed to mention that he usually forgot to lock his doors even when he wasn't home. It wasn't like he had anything of value that was worth stealing, right? If he came home to find someone had chosen his house as a suitable shelter, he'd probably gladly share as long as they weren't… y’know, a jerk.

He eyed Sasuke carefully, relieved that he was physically okay, or so it seemed. He had mainly wanted to see him to ensure that his physical state was fine.

As he made his way around the table to take a seat, he secretly watched Sasuke from the corner of his eye as he took a bite of the ramen. He couldn't restrain the wide smile that spread across his face, overjoyed by the fact that he had shown up and actually ate the food he had gotten specifically for him. Sasuke hadn’t said anything, but he felt appreciated. It was almost surreal, seeing him again. He wanted to reach out and touch him just to make sure it wasn't an illusion, even though it was fairly obvious that he wasn't. It seemed like such a long time since he had last seed Sasuke and he wanted to take advantage of this opportunity; yell at him, punch him, monologue at him, but most of all, he wanted to hug him and tell him everything was going to be okay as long as he looked out for him. But he couldn't and he wouldn't. Not only because he couldn't guarantee anything, but also because he was more sure than anything that Sasuke wouldn't let him touch him, let alone bring up the touchy subject of his brother, and would leave at the slightest sign of over-excitement.

The question surprised him because he thought it should have been fairly obvious he was living on his own, especially when he had asked the other to come stay with him a short while ago. Was he trying to start a conversation? The thought of Sasuke actually trying to act normal around him instead of ignoring him as usual made him happy and at the same time, nostalgic. His features softened into a gentle, yet remorseful expression, eyes flicking from the boy who sat in front of him, to the chopsticks that he held over his bowl. He swirled his chopsticks around inside the bowl, lifting a good chunk of noodles up to his face, the heat radiating onto his cheeks seeming oddly refreshing after eating plain fish for so long.

"Nope. I'm living on my own," he explained, glancing around the kitchen while slurping up his noodles. He chewed and swallowed, clearing his throat before he began to speak again. "Sometimes it gets quiet around here, but then I just go outside! The lower level is kind of boring since I've been here before, though… but that's okay!"

Living on his own made him miss his friends, including Sakura who had lived with him during his previous stay. It got lonely once in a while but he had a lot of ways of distracting himself, like… looking for Sasuke! Plus, he always had Aaron to visit and people to talk to through the computer.

“I hope you found somewhere nice to stay, well, not that there’s anywhere nice here, but I don’t want to be the reason why you’re homeless! After this, you can find somewhere to stay without having to worry about me trying to find you! I promise.”

Sasuke looked up from his ramen and watched the other with his eyes, threatening to pin him on the spot. Defense of one's home, be it by something even as simple as locks, was the first step to safety. In this place, who knew how many people could sneak in while they were out of a residence and lie in wait with kunai or sword, counting down the seconds to rendered death.

He idly wondered if his deadpan look at the blonde said as much, before silently slurping more ramen. Really, it tasted wonderful.

In no way was Sasuke making conversation; the silence was a blessed thing that he was loathed to shatter. However, it was in his best interests to find out if they would be interrupted, or even for future references. He needed knowledge on the fact, needed to know his surroundings and the surroundings of other people to make a more sizable and reasonable strategy for himself. After all, this one week of silence would go quickly, and then where would he be?

"For seven days, anyway."

He wasn't about to let him know that he was staying with Aaron's lower level life, or that there was anything tying him down. Instead, he ate in silence once more, the twin sticks that made up his utensils rising and guiding slippery noodles to his mouth.

"Have you seen anyone since you've arrived?"

Naruto merely blinked up at Sasuke as he watched his expression carefully, not finding his blank face unusual. He really hated it when Sasuke refused to show any emotion; it made him wonder what he was thinking about constantly. At least an eyebrow raise was enough to say something. He wanted to see an actual reaction out of the other boy, something to remind him of his best friend, the old Sasuke. He hadn’t realized how much he actually missed him until he sat down and gazed at his face. The hairstyle was the same, the facial structure was the same, but there was still something different about him. All those years alone with Orochimaru-- could it have really changed him? To the point where he can’t change back? No. Naruto wouldn’t give up hope. The Sasuke he knew so well must have been inside of him… somewhere.

“No, I mean… I’ll leave you alone. For good. Unless you want to…” he trailed off. “I don’t want to be a burden to you anymore, Sasuke. You should live somewhere safe in peace, and not have to worry about… avoiding me.”

He slowed his pace down, not wanting to finish too early. Sasuke was a hell of a lot more important than ramen. He lifted more noodles to his face, but slurped one noodle at a time into his mouth. He wanted to prolong this night as much as he could; he would reach out to Sasuke. Somehow.

“I’ve seen Aaron and that’s about it. He’s helped me a lot.” Naruto’s smile returned, giving the thumbs-up sign over at Sasuke.
