With his short hair and receding hairline? Hee.

I always cry when I see that video (I was at school in Wales that year) but I also marvel how Manly it is. Nice to see sexism in the music industry has indeed improved over the years.

I had a crush on nearly all of them when I was in High School... LOL sukaycirquegirl December 23 2006, 01:52:11 UTC
I'm so happy to know that someone else noticed that the girls only got to sing in the chorus, that always kind of bothered me. Of course, all those boys are so very pretty and wear so much hair product - maybe they figured that took care of any perceived sexism.

Who were the big British/Irish female pop stars of 1984? I don't really know because I was listening pretty exclusively to heavy metal by that time.

Hmmm... the British part might be the hook... still sukaycirquegirl December 23 2006, 04:18:48 UTC
here goes... in no particular order... Do They Know it's Christmas was recorded at the end of 84... so I'll try to keep the list to the early-mid 80s ( ... )

OHH... Oh OH.... how could I forget... Berlin w/ singer Terri Nunn... and Laura Branigan (who sang Gloria)... and Irene Cara who sang Fame... and Pat Benatar too... I'm getting old.

OH... and I looked it up... Blondie and the GoGos were right in there in the early to mid 80s.

So, since it's all British/Irish, it would be Roxy Music, The Human League, Thompson Twins, Yazoo, Eurythmics, Siouxsie...I'm actually a little surprised Annie Lennox, Alison Moyet, or the women from Human League wouldn't have been participants, or at least asked. (Maybe they were?)

I always think of Blondie as mid to late '70s-early '80s (they were actually one of the earlier CBGB bands) and the Go-Gos primarily as early '80s, although my brother saw them in the late '70s when they were a punk band.

LOL - my very first introduction to the Go-Gos (I think) was in the film Urgh A Music War... in which they were supposed to be a punk band but they already seemed more "new wave" to me... :) Man... now I want to find a copy of that film. I used to have it on video tape - but it was on Beta and I threw it away when my Beta machine died oh so many years ago.

Urgh, unfortunately, hasn't been released on DVD and if it was ever legally released on videotape it was very early on. I remember catching bits of it on "Night Flight," and knowing it was cool, but at the time (I was probably 10 at the oldest) didn't know how important a lot of those bands and performers would be to me, oh, five, ten, twenty-four years later. I keep looking out for it online and not finding even bootlegs of it.

I did read that Penelope Spheeris is working on some deluxe Decline DVD set, but I don't know when that will be released either.

I have my original Office Small Business Edition but threw away the case with the 15 digit codes. How do I retreive these codes.

I do not understand what this response has to do with the 2 year old discussion of 80's music.

But you've got two Bananaramas and Jody Watley!

Alison Moyet was bigger than Bananarama then, and where's she? Too fat to be allowed in the video? I always thought that was Sade, but you're right. So there's another. I am forced to admit that my musical preference at that time was decidedly for male voices, so I don't really remember many of the women. Annie Lennox for certain. Annabella what's-her-name from Bow Wow Wow may not have been big enough or still around. Otherwise, I can't think of anyone who hasn't been mentioned. Sinead O'Connor didn't come around until a bit later.

It's not only how few women there are, but also not one of them had a solo part.

Roxy Music had a woman? Or are we getting confused with Roxette, who were Scandinavian of some type and I remember from later in the 80s (like my last two years of college, 88 & 89).

P.S. I love Midge Ure. Also, who are the black guys in that video? I've always wondered.

The black guys, according to Wikipedia, are Kool and the Gang, I believe the only Americans in the song.

I wasn't sure about Roxy Music having a woman, either. But then, I pretty much think of Roxy Music as Bryan Ferry and (very early on) Brian Eno, and then some other people.
