title: friendship or that other thing
Heechul/Hankyung
mostly-gen fluff?
it took three tries to write this >:(
Hankyung was reasonably sure that his friendship with Heechul was completely and totally platonic. Even when Heechul would wrap himself around Hankyung like a blanket or second skin. There was some teasing - mostly from Kangin, but everyone got a word in at some point - and Hankyung would think that yes, it was nice even if Heechul was just out of the shower and getting water all over his shirt. Sometimes Shiwon would give him this look like he could tell exactly what Hankyung was thinking, but thought that laughing outright would be considered rude. Instead, Shiwon would just keep it to himself until later when Donghae was around and they could talk about everyone else as if they were alone, even if they weren't.
There were a few times when Hankyung suspected that maybe he'd misread the situation and that Heechul did like him in a way that Hankyung wasn't sure he could return. They were close like brothers, except not quite that. Hankyung couldn't say why, but the idea of being related to Heechul was always just a little weird. He mentally grasped for the correct way to describe his relationship with Heechul, eventually coming up with a mental shrug, some hand waving, and an awkward thumbs-up. Not the height of eloquence, exactly.
But mostly Hankyung didn't think about those things because he was continuously surrounded by a lot of boys who never quite embraced the idea of personal boundaries. Frankly, Hankyung thought the only thing that would shock him would be if he walked in on someone else having sex, and even then he'd mostly just feel unclean and a little ill. There were some things he never wanted to see, and he'd seen a lot.
Heechul, of course, was always full of surprises and one day, after he'd finished looking through Hankyung's shirts for one to borrow - and then never return; eventually completely forgotten until the next time Heechul borrowed something else - he kissed Hankyung softly on the lips, in a way that definitely wasn't just friendly. Hankyung stood there, unsure what to do or say or think, and Heechul rolled his eyes then hit the back of Hankyung's head. "Don't give me that look, it's unattractive," he said.
Oh, Hankyung thought. "Sorry," he replied.
Heechul frowned, staring at Hankyung as if he was looking at the dumbest creature on Earth. Hankyung had to agree that, at that precise moment, Heechul wasn't far off.
"I have to go now," said Heechul, speaking slowly, fingers lightly trailing over Hankyung's cheek. "I'm already ten minutes late." Hankyung nodded because, he had decided, intelligent - or even coherent - speech was entirely too difficult. Heechul sighed, and stepped away from Hankyung. For a moment he looked as if he wanted to say something, but then he smiled and turned, leaving the room.
"Oh," Hankyung said to no one in particular.
At no point in Hankyung's life had he been taught what to do when your best friend likes you in a way that you're unable to reciprocate and he thought it was entirely unfair to leave something so important out of the curriculum. So he spent the rest of the day, and the three following days, worrying over what to do or say or think because he still had not figured that out.
Except Heechul never made any follow up moves or changed his attitude toward Hankyung or did anything different from his normal behavior. Hankyung eventually had to conclude that he really had no idea what to do. Eventually he decided that the best course of action would be to seek advice from everyone else. But not in so many words, and without actually asking for anyone's input on his love life. Subtlety, Hankyung concluded, would be best.
It wasn't very hard to work in a mention of Heechul in every subsequent conversation that Hankyung had with the rest of Super Junior or the managers. He could even to turn a short phone conversation with his parents into a forty minute discussion of Heechul's finer points.
"And this morning I was trying to find one of my shirts when I remembered that Heechul probably had it, so I went in his room to look for it, but everything in there is a mess. Aside from for his socks. He always keeps those carefully organized. It's a little weird, don't you think? But Heechul says that the key to any outfit is in the details, so I guess that makes sense. Anyway, I couldn't find the shirt I wanted but Heechul gave me one of his," said Hankyung. "It's really nice and I think it might be new," he added, pulling at the fabric a little.
Down the phone line, Hankyung could hear his mother softly laughing. "Sometimes I think I know more about Heechul's life than I do about yours," she said. "You talk about him so much."
Oh, Hankyung breathed out.
He had never really noticed before that he spoke about Heechul a lot, especially to his parents. But, he reasoned, it was only natural because he spent more time with Heechul than anyone else. Things like that just couldn't be helped.
But nothing was that simple where Heechul was concerned, and one night when Hankyung was tired, but not tired enough to sleep, he walked out of his room and found Heechul on the sofa, lying on his side and watching a ballet on the television. "This is so boring," Heechul said, turning onto his back. "You're much better than any of them. I'd rather watch you."
And Oh, Hankyung realized.
Heechul held out his hand, and then pulled Hankyung over him. Hankyung moved around a little, trying to get comfortable, before resting his head on Heechul's chest.
"You're so stupid," Heechul said, running his fingers through Hankyung's hair.
Oh, thought Hankyung. "Yeah."
