Gongaga, Gaia a-la Reno and Elena, Wednesday Fandom Time

Dec 29, 2010 15:29

Okay. So, Mideel had been a bust. But once Zack had been given clearance to leave the clinic that they'd found there, he and Ino had hunted down transit to get them the hell out of there. It didn't even matter where, at this point. Civilization. Any continent would do, so long as it wasn't Wutai, and wasn't drowned in mako. Fortunately, for some ( Read more... )

Corel wasn't at all where Zack had remembered Corel being. The place that he'd been certain Corel was located at was surrounded on all sides by quicksand and desert so harsh that he was certain even a chocobo couldn't cross it. There stood the Gold Saucer, like some kind of twisting skyscraper monument through the dunes, but Corel...?

They'd had to consult the maps on their PHS systems, which were becoming ever more useful on this trip, and those had led them to a place which wasn't labelled Corel, but North Corel instead. And, while it didn't seem to be strewn with ruins the same way that Gongaga and Mideel had been, the sheer poverty that the people here were living in was...

Zack stared for a small eternity. And then shook his head and walked into the town, which seemed to be mostly made up of crates and tents and any junk that people would have been able to drag through the harsh desert from their old home. The other Corel. Or whatever Zack imagined was left of it ( ... )

Ino was... pale. A whole new shade of pale, truly.

This was the worst vacation ever and why was every place they visited something awful? This was a different sort of awful, but almost more oppressive for all of that.

She stared, swallowed hard, and hurried after Zack. "Do we need a tent to camp out?"

Really, she was okay with the under the stars thing. Totally okay.

"Keeps the monsters off," Zack pointed out, putting his arm around her shoulder and stepping up to the... to the... overturned crate which was apparently the items and tools shop. "I mean, not that the monsters here are really tough or anything, but..."

He wasn't certain where he was going with that.

Right. Right.

She was just going to... be glad for his arm around her and try not to think about the... village and the crate and oh god she almost wanted to be back in Gongaga where at least there was fresh bed and quiet persistence instead of this hopeless anger that filled the air.

"Right," she said, with a bob of her head. "Um. Hello?"

One tent, super fast, and then they were fleeing this place.

This particular shopkeeper didn't waste any time getting down to business.

"Please, buy something! Anything will do!"

Zack looked at his stock. Nodded a little. Right.

"I'll take a... a tent?"

Not that there was much selection. His options were tents, potions, or phoenix downs.

What was with these phoenix downs?

"Several tents," she said, interrupting Zack even though it was his money. She couldn't just... if buying a few more tents, which they could easily afford would help... did it hurt?

"Please."

Zack paused for a moment at that, glanced her way, and then nodded.

"And fifty phoenix downs." A pause. "Hand them to her, though."

... Well, he couldn't carry them. He was full-up.

She nodded to the shopkeeper that, yes, that was fine with the both of them.

<> she murmured mentally to Zack, though, as a promise. She knew that he didn't really care, but Ino did. But--no way was she going to argue here. The woman in Mideel had been better off than this by far.

Zack glanced sidelong as Ino, and then shrugged a bit. He wasn't going to argue, either. Corel needed the Gil. He idly wondered for a moment if the people here would accept handouts of any sort.

He decided, instead, to just conveniently lose some extra gil on the way out of down.

One thing could be said for the shopkeeper. He was certainly efficient at packing up their order for them. For all of the rummaging that he had to do to find it, really. Zack gave him a slightly shaky if thankful smile, paid him (tipped him), and then, with several more tents on his shoulders than he'd expected, made a quick heel-face-turn and started his march toward the edge of town. His PHS map pointed to a rope bridge leading to the old railroad tracks, and they could probably just follow those out until they made it to the plains on the outskirts of Costa Del Sol ( ... )

Ino gave him a plaintive look.

"You mean that trend where everything is destroyed and broken and we're kinda lost?"

Yes, Ino. That trend.

"That one, yeah," Zack agreed, sighing and pulling out his PHS, giving it a few good raps on the last bits of railing that seemed to be left around the walkways to the reactor.

"At least there are plenty of... birds?"

Yes. And cockatolis. Such lovely wildlife in these parts. The bombs across the swinging rope bridge back there were especially charming.

"I don't think abusing your PHS is going to help," she sighed, "and yes, plenty of birds. And we can add Bolt Plumes to our list of 'own more than any two people need' for, like, forever."

"We could donate them to the shopkeeper when we go back through North Corel," Zack sighed, pocketing his phone again. "It's not like he can't use the stock, I don't think..."

Really. Three items. At least taking inventory would be easy?

She glanced around, shading her eyes.

"I think that's going to have to be our route," Ino said, though reluctantly. "We're not getting anywhere fast here."

No, they were getting more lost with every turn despite the map.

Zack nodded, turning and starting back the way they came. It really didn't help that they were making this trip in the dark, no.

"At least this way, we can follow the stuff I tripped over on the way in until we get back to those railroad tracks."

Ino had to giggle a bit at that.

"It's just 'cause you get impatient and stomp along without looking as carefully as you could," she said, because Ino hadn't been tripping over near as many things. Carefully, carefully. "And I don't know that he'd accept charity, but maybe we can sneak the plumes into his place?"
