Okay, okay, so it's not exactly the Westboro Baptist Church or anything, but still. It never ceases to amaze me how strong the opposition to marriage equality is. I mean, dedicating an entire bus tour to telling people exactly why marriage should be between a man and a woman? That's a bit much.
(Gavin Creel would not approve)
But seriously, this got me thinking. Why do people care so much? I mean, it's obvious why people are fighting for equality. They want to marry the person they're in love with. They want to be able to participate in the purest form of love that exists: marriage. Marriage is pledging your life to another person, swearing to love them forever and care for them and always be there for them. Why does NOM care if two men or two women pledge their lives to each other? It doesn't affect them in the slightest.
"They'll corrupt our children." Um, no. You don't become gay by hanging out with gay people. Last I checked, I'm still attracted to men. Here, I'll check again for you right now.
...
Yep, I'm a puddle of goo again, thanks to GeorgeAkram holding a puppy.
You don't become gay by association. Gay people are not going to fill your children's heads with bad ideas. They are not going to kidnap and molest your children. They are not going to bomb your churches. Actually, there are probably about ten sitting in your church right now, praying to God to take these feelings away because I'm not allowed to be gay because my pastor/priest/whoever says it's a sin so that means God must hate me!
Part of me wishes that NOM was coming to the Burgh. I want to take one of their representatives aside and have a chat with him/her and ask just why this is such a big deal for them. Why are they spending thousands of dollars on a bus tour when it does not affect their daily lives? I don't understand their reasoning, and I want to understand. I will never agree, but I want to understand.
