Со времён сенатора Маккарти республиканская традиция нагнетания страха в качество орудия пропаганды обращалась к образу всесильного КГБ и его агентов, внедрённых в высшие эшелоны американской власти. До недавнего времени в эту же традицию вписывался Путин, как продолжатель дела КГБ и бывший верный член КПСС.



Традицию хорошо иллюстрирует нашумевшая книга "American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character" (2013) консервативного автора Дианы Вест. В книге рассказывается о проникновении советских агентов  в США и их фактическом влиянии на политику администраций Рузвельта и Трумена в пользу Сталина и его захвата Восточной Европы. Конспирология основана на исторических свидетельствах, но бьет через край.



На книгу откликнулся известный консервативный автор Дэвид Хоровитц - ментор Стивена Миллера и других идеологов трампизма.

On Dec. 14, 2016, during a videotaped event, Horowitz expressed happiness about Trump’s victory and said Republicans had finally woken up to his approach to politics. He pulled from his suit coat a piece of paper listing Freedom Center supporters already in the administration.
“It’s quite an impressive list,” Horowitz said, rattling off the names: Sessions, Bannon, Vice President Pence, Reince Priebus, Kellyanne Conway and at least six others.
“My personal favorite is Steve Miller, because Steve, who was today appointed the senior policy adviser in the White House . . . is a kind of protege of mine,” he said. “So the center has a big stake in this administration.”

Родители Хоровитца были членами компартии США и поклонниками Сталина. Можно быть поэтому книга Вест показалась ему излишне конспирологичной и он поместил на своём сайте разгромную рецензию профессионального историка под названием "McCarthy on steroids":

Throughout American Betrayal, West uses the terms “occupied” and “controlled” to describe the influence the Soviet Union exerted over U.S. policy through its agents and spies. She believes she has exposed “the Communist-agent-occupation of the U.S. government” during the Roosevelt and Truman eras, and that her discoveries add up to a Soviet-controlled American government that conspired to strengthen Russia throughout World War II at the expense of American interests, marginalize anti-Communist Germans, and deliver the crucial material for the Atomic Bomb to Stalin and his henchmen. It also conspired to cover up the betrayal. In West’s summation: “The Roosevelt administration [was] penetrated, fooled, subverted, in effect hijacked by Soviet agents… and engaged in a “‘sell-out’ to Stalin” that “conspirators of silence on the Left…would bury for as long as possible, desperately throwing mud over it and anyone who wanted the sun to shine in.” According to West, it was only because Washington was “Communist-occupied” that the United States aligned itself with the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany.
But Ms. West writes without an understanding of historical context and lacks awareness of much of the scholarly literature on the subjects she writes about. Moreover, she disregards the findings of the sources she does rely on when they contradict her yellow journalism conspiracy theories. Consequently she arrives at judgment after judgment that is not only bizarre on its face, but also unwarranted by the evidence and refuted by the very authorities she draws on.

Спрашивается: Как должен реагировать специалист по кремлевским шпионам и агентам влияния, которую нещадно критиковали за преувеличение этого влияния, после того, как обнаруживаются явные следы вмешательства Кремля в американские выборы и внедрения кремлевских агентов в высшие эшелоны власти? Правильно, перейти в глухое "ихтамнетство" и категорические отрицать какое-либо вмешательство.

I suspect that the DNC was brought low by a disgusted American leaker, very possibly Seth Rich, someone who had had it with Clinton corruption, with DNC-Clinton collusion against Bernie Sanders, not a foreign actor at all. That, of course, is my hunch, which throws a certain desperate logic into the “Russian hacking” hysteria (Look over there….) Then there are the opaque and furtive qualities of the “Russian hacking” finding, which exhibits every sign of being a Swamp creation.

Еще недавно, пытаясь растолковать своим коллегам по партии (вроде Ann "Let's make Russia our sister country" Coulter), что Путин - не их друг, Диана Вест ссылалась на Джеффа Найквиста, автора книжек о планах Путина по захвату всего мира, вроде "The New Tactics of Global War: Reflections on the Changing Balance of Power in the Final Days of Peace" (2015).

Ныне Найквист тоже хватается за "ихтамнетство" и спасательного Рича. Его теория: во-первых, никаких российских хакеров не было, а емайлы в Викиликс передал Рич. Во-вторых, путинские агенты, разумеетса, вмешивались в выборы, но не для того, чтобы помочь Трампу, а чтобы помочь Клинтон, при этом изощренно наследив, чтобы все подумали на Трампа.

So, if you haven't understood the game as yet: repeat this sentence, again and again: "Russia hacked the election." Then put two bullets in the back of Seth Rich and call the Special Prosecutor in the morning. Trump is going down next! I say again, even if Trump was in bed with the Russian mafia, Russia did not hack the election. Russia did not want Trump to be president. They wanted Clinton. <...> Russia didn't have to hack the election. They are never so obvious, so crass. The Russians have strategic style! They have elegance! They have no economy, and their leaders are psychopaths; but hey, they're not going to hack the DNC and get caught. It isn't what they do.

Но, как хорошо известно Путину, к конспирологии склонны не только ультраправые, но и ультралевые. В пику известной книжке "The Plot to Hack America: How Putin’s Cyberspies and WikiLeaks Tried to Steal the 2016 Election" ультралевый автор и поклонник Уго Чавеса Дэн Ковалик написал конспирологическую книжку "The Plot to Scapegoat Russia: How the CIA and the Deep State Have Conspired to Vilify Putin".
