Day 15: Best Convention Game
Honestly, I'm shocked I've been able to keep with this project so far. Just about halfway done, whoo!
The best con game I've ever played in has got to be the You Too Can Cthulhu game we played at my first GenCon. It was a Call of Cthulhu game set during the French Revolution, where we played investigators sent to look into the disappearance of one of Robespierre's minions in the countryside (I think). As we investigated, we began coming across more and more bizarre occurrences, including a mutated pig and a murderous woman in a cocoon. Several of the investigators began to change slowly as well, becoming more and more bizarre as the investigation continued. The plot ultimately revolved around some guy who had created a machine that was pulling unrest out into the open, and the investigators who were being changed were the ones having the most internal conflict about the Revolution itself.
The really great thing about the adventure was how it was run - the You Too Can Cthulhu group is incredibly impressive, putting tons of work into their games. There were detailed props, slideshows giving us pictures of important NPCs, and even lighting and sound effects! Most important was the GM - the man known only as Bob Geis. Bob did a great job of setting the mood and keeping everyone involved. He stayed in character at the right times (as opposed to switching to a more omniscient GM voice), and as a result it's one of the only con games I've played where we were in character just about the entire time. He also did a great job of building tension - one scene where we were walking through a forest got super intense, then dissipated with nothing out of the ordinary happening, but we were all really scared in that moment! A great time all around.
