Day 14: Best Convention Purchase
It's GenCon time, so the next four topics in this project are all convention related, to remind those of us who aren't there how much fun we could be having. Anyway, I think my best convention purchase ever is probably Apocalypse World. I'd gone to the convention without having heard anything about it, but when I saw a new game at the Lumpley Games booth, I decided to demo it. Lumpley is an indie gaming company run by Vincent Baker, creator of games like Dogs in the Vineyard. I wound up having the demo with Vincent himself, and was really grabbed by the setting straight off the bat. When the payoff to the demo involved Vincent having the chance to ask me a deep, personal question about my character, suggesting that I could take the answer as warped and disgusting as I wanted, but I instead made the answer more sentimental and kind of sweet, he said simply "Awesome." Sold.
Since that point, I've become a huge fan of the Apocalypse World engine, which really drives stories along at a great pace. I've played Apocalypse World and Dungeon World at conventions, and have played short campaigns of Monsterhearts (one of the best games I've ever run) and Monster of the Week. They've ranged from good to unforgettable experiences.
