I really feel bad about skipping my cousin's wedding, but I'm stoked about getting my finances back in the black. I cut some grass for quick cash the other day, and then I caught up with that guy who owed me $100. He was cool about it and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn't jerking my chain with the call-in. Most guys from work are good about paying their debts, but one time I had to come to a guy's house. He had strung me along for about two weeks with excuses, and I believe he owed me $400. When I had finally had enough I showed up unannounced at his front door and called him out. I ended up driving him to an ATM to get my money. I fully expected to have to kick his back door down and take the equivelent of the debt in electronics. You have to remember, it would take a couple grand's worth of stuff to add up to $400 if you're pawning it or fencing it out of a truck behind Angelo's.

One time a guy allegedly stole some money from the firefighter's union and he "accidentally" fell off of a roof during a housefire. He paid the money back before he came back to duty (while he was off injured). It behooves you to be completely trustworthy before you scale 40 or 50 feet atop a burning, partially collapsed structure with a bunch of guys holding axes and chain saws. This is especially true when you know that, if you do get hurt, it will be those very same guys taking care of you on the ambulance ride to the hospital.

Don't get the wrong idea about Louisville firefighters. The real world isn't like "Rescue Me", where everybody is a theif, addict or murderer. The vast majority of guys I work with keep incredibly high ethical standards. Much more so than in any other job I've had. The people that get hired want to save lives and protect property. If they had wanted to hurt people, they would've been cops. I'm just saying that there's a high percentage of hardcore individuals on the LFD, and their two main ethical impetus are justice and a sense of duty; not pity.
