Beer is food

I've been drinking alot of beer lately, which is a good thing. I have, possibly, been spending too much time and money at Angelo's (34th and Bank). I truly love that bar and all of the happy little creatures that dwell there, but I really think the beer selection could stand to expand a little. It's pretty much just Anheuser-Busch products. Ever since they quit making Sterling this past summer, I've been unable to find anything that tastes right to me. Foster's is the closest I've found. It's high alcohol content and the fact that it's union made and bottled in the USA, and not in Austrailia as I thought, makes it even more reminiscent of Sterling. Even the 750 mil cans kind of remind me of the old Sterling Big Mouths. Still, it's not quite the same.

I'm now trying to make my own beer with one of those home microbrew kits. I cooked the wort ( unfermented beer) last Saturday, December 30th. I mixed a malt extract and boiling hops along with 2 cups of sugar booster, (to increase body and alcohol), according to a recipe for a Canadian Ale. I also added half a cup of brown sugar for color and an additional alcohol boost. It's been in the fermenter for over a week now, and I think I'll leave it in for about 1 more. Once the yeast quits bubbling and the beer clears up a little, I'll give it a taste and probably bottle it. It will need to condition and carbonate for at least a week after that. I hope the first batch is a good one and I'm already collecting materials to build a 5 gallon fermenter, instead of my current 2 1/2 gallon one.

I'm driving the guys at the firehouse crazy because I talk about beer, ingredients and brewing techniques all day long. They probably pop a can open as soon as they get off, like I do, after listening to me yap about beer for 24 hours.

Today I went to Angelo's to watch U of L kick some ass, bought a few draft buds from Taryn, went to dinner with Andrea and drank some dark lager there, then we stopped by the liquor store on the way home. I bought 6 BBC American Pale Ales, which I just finished off. I think it's a little too hoppy and not strong enough, alcohol-wise. I think it's a good beer after you've had about 3 other beers to numb your taste buds.
