I think your point of view is very valid; people who care about something (whether it be gay rights or rights for any other minority) shouldn't put forth effort just one day. Yeah, there is a smugness involved in that that is totally undeserved.
But I think something like this does have its use, since it brings attention to an issue and shows that it's something people are concerned about. The importance of it is it's telling something to people who weren't aware of the issue and telling them that a large part of society thinks its worth their time. It's exerting agency: sometimes people want to send a message without relying on news stations or websites.
I totally agree about people who just do it to feel good about themselves though. And you shouldn't feel obligated to participate just because you're GLBT or an ally out of fear that you might look like a traitor or something for refusing to.
