Game of Thrones livebloggish thing

Apr 17, 2011 23:19

So I am back in Baltimore for a few days, and was despairing because my parents don't have HBO, which cockblocks me from getting my hands on the first episode of Game of Thrones. But as luck would have it, HBO is free this weekend, so I got to watch the premiere after all! And I have Thoughts on it, as you do.

Have my real-time reactions to the episode! Spoilers for the episode, obviously. )

fandom: game of thrones/asoiaf, and there was much rejoicing, reaction shot

Jaime. Awesome. Also I want his armor so frickin' bad.

Dany. ...yeah. Pretty much you said everything I was thinking.

Tyrion. Hell yeah, though I think he's both drinking and whoring a lot more than I remember from the books -- but I could be forgetting.

Cersei. I have a terrible fear I'm going to end up liking Cersei now. The actress delivers such great looks.

His armor is gorgeous. He is gorgeous. He is every bit the asshole I should be, and I love him for it.

Upon talking to Mith and upon catching parts of the episode again, I'm pretty convinced that yes, they want us to be damn uncomfortable with how Dany is being treated, and no, they're not trying to sex her up, they're showing that sexing her up is icky. I could unpick this in more detail, but really, I don't know how often I can rewatch her scenes.

He drinks and whores a lot in the books! I think they're frontloading it more in the TV show, though. And yeah. Ugh. I DON'T WANT TO LIKE CERSEI. Hating Cersei is such a comfortable thing for me by now. But I have to give her actress props; her bitchfaces are magnificent.

Even allowing that Dany is in a terrible place, I cannot deny her actress is a lovely woman. However, for one brief early scene (around the bathtub) they didn't lighten her eyebrows like they did for some of the other scenes and oh god it stuck out.

See, I'm firmly in the Anti-Lannister camp normally; but the actors doing the Lannister kids are so damned good that I worry I'm going to root for them even so.

...also, the actor playing Jon Snow is too pretty for the role, I think.

I didn't notice that! But yes, Emilia Clarke is gorgeous. I will feel more comfortable perving on her later in the series.

So am I, generally, though I've always adored Tyrion. But Jaime grew on me to almost frightening degrees over the course of the series, and I kind of adore him now, even if he teeeeechnically hasn't built up enough narrative goodwill in the first episode of GoT for me to love him so. Oh well. (Cersei and Tywin can, however, die in a fire.)

ARYA IS AMAZING THUS FAR. NO COMPLAINTS. NONE WHATSOEVER. God, I can't wait to see what they'll do with her plotline.

Someone will soon, I'm sure! The Internet is usually reliable about these things.

For some reason the Unfortunate Implications of the Dothraki portrayal come through so much more clearly in television. Or has my memory faded, and it wasn't actually that bad in the books?

I feel the "no" dialoguebit doesn't really make sense if they made the changes they did.

It's not great in the books, I think, but the visual nature of the medium makes the Unfortunateness a lot more evident. A picture's worth a thousand words and all that.
