It's only fair. Like nothing in the world is fair. It's fitting that he wears these pearls every time he performs. Stolen pearls for memories of a drunken, stolen kiss. Things he hopes to hold onto forever, even after he's moved on from cabaret.
“You should do it!”
The memory comes easily, floating to the surface as he stands just off stage.
Kurt smiling at him from across the booth, his cheeks flushed pink from unseasonable heat and generous helpings of alcohol. Authentic in his lederhosen, a perfect imitation of a Bavarian boy beauty. If you're going to get drunk with old friends you've only just gotten to know again then Octoberfest is perfect.
"Seriously? You're drunk!" Puck replies, too loudly; "When Lee bows out you'll be the one in the dress!"
"I think," Kurt replies earnestly, "it'd be better with you!"
"Right, it'd be funny."
"No! I mean, everyone would think that! But then you'd get on stage and it would be amazing!"
The intro dies into a round of applause. Puck steps onto the stage, his balance perfect. Silk swishes against his calves. He gives the audience a sultry smirk and they, like every other audience, give a polite chuckle. They haven't been captured yet. They haven't had the chance to hear him sing.
The theatre is closed but Kurt miraculously has a key. They giggle and laugh as they 'break into’ the dressing room. Kurt puts the necklace on him and tries to get him to paint his face like Lee does for the stage. He succeeds only in getting Puck's mouth smudged red along with his fingers and smudges on Puck's chin where Kurt had grabbed him to keep him still. They're laughing so hard it hurts.
But when he steals that kiss it suddenly goes quiet.
Puck doesn’t wear a wig, so when he first enters the stage the audience thinks it's another comedy piece. He doesn’t try to prove them wrong. He just sings. Sways a little in a subtle dance, and by the end of it women are always squirming and men have no idea if they should feel this attracted to him. His round of applause is always thunderous.
He only notices the necklace after shedding his rented costume. He remembers thinking hard about calling Kurt, inviting him over, telling him that he felt the chemistry too. But it's late.
He decides to talk to Kurt at rehearsal in the afternoon.
So Puck goes to bed thinking of restaurants that maybe Kurt might like to go to, all of the cool places he'd found before he'd gone to that audition for the cabaret.
Nobody at the theatre knows about the crash until much later.
Puck had heard about it on the radio without realising.
A fatal two-car smash.
Puck bows to the loudest applause of the night.
Somewhere in another universe Kurt greets him at the dressing room door. They kiss. "I told you so," he says.
