If you have them to spare, I'd appreciate if you could send some well-wishes or wellness vibes to my mother. She has a filthy chest bug she can't seem to shake (it started before the holidays) and the medications the doctor put her on are affecting her pre-existing conditions, as well as dehydrating her. *worries*
I also have a few recs, both fan and pro. I'd have posted them a few days back, but migraine. The dregs of it are still tasking me something fierce, although thankfully not as badly as before.
Two sshg's to start. One teases, one doesn't.
The Contact by ChristinaFay. Interesting premise - that Dumbledore provided a means of communication between Hermione and Severus back in year five tht continued to serve past his death. This is one of those fics that switch back and forth in time. Worth reading as it's well-written and the characterisations are very good. My sole quibble is this is one of those rare very well-written fics that really did need a steamy sex scene after all that ust. Many well-constructed fics can be satisfying without it, but in this particular case it seemed a bit of a let down. That said, it's still a seriously enjoyable and imaginative read with plenty of appearances from some other favourite characters.
But Wear The Chain by Elsie Girl. This is a lightweight fic, good for distraction. This one teases, but delivers... eventually. If it had been titled "cock block" it would have been apropos. This fic contains a few typos, but it's a good long bit of tension, touches of fluff and occasional teen aggro, mostly from Ron and occasionally from Hermione who is very much an uncertain and mercurial young woman. The premise is an old one - Snape is affected by an outside source and reveals his feelings for Hermione. But are they his feelings or is something else talking? If they are his feelings, will he ever admit it? If he does admit it, will he be entirely Slytherin about it? This author needs a better SP&G beta, but has already learned how to string out the tension. I'll be keeping an eye on her.
one sshp rec -aka- the wip I was suckered into. *small scream* (explains: I don't read wips) I asked for completed fics and for some reason this one popped up so I started to read and was dismayed over 100k words later to find it wasn't finished. Oh, but I wish it was.
Fallen Grace by Hecate's Kiss is an ambiguous Harry, slave!Severus fic with plenty of angst, h/c, and slash. If you don't mind wips or intensity or dub con or master/slave stories, not to mention political intrigue, and some interesting au wizarding concepts, you might try it.
In pro fic areas, I'm nearly done with Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. If you haven't read it yet, you might want to give it a try. It's been gripping, one of those books I resent having to set down, with plenty of realism which I've particularly enjoyed. Not sure if I want to watch the movie, given how good the book is; usually it ruins it.
Hope the year is off to a (more) pleasant start for everyone.
