Coldplay - Adelaide Entertainment Centre - 5th July 2006 Review

About time I did another Audio Review.. whether anybody reads it.. meh... whatever... ANYWAY>>>>

On a chilly night on 5th July 2006 thousands of people crammed into Adelaide Entertainment Center for the one-night only Coldplay Concert. Sold out almost immediately when the tickets were first released in Novemeber 2005, it was worth the wait!

Youth Group opened for Coldplay and I must admit as a fan of them pre-Forever Young breaktrhough, they were not too bad but at the same time I was disappointed witht hier preformaced. They started off poorly, didn't engage the audience and unlike other concerts where the support act hype up the audience and plays off the fact that they're opening of the greatest band in the eyes of these fans, Youth Group didn't really do this, and didn't really kep the crowd active. In Fact many of the seated crowd left the arena to come back when Coldplay were about to start. Obviously the standing crowd didn't leave else they'd lose thier place. You have to give then credit thought that they did finnish well. They left thier hits till the end so I enjoyed that, I'm glad they played my two favourite songs, Shadowland and Skeleton Jar. Personally they should have spaced out thier "hits" thoughout their set. They're not popular enough to play unknown songs first then clump thier comercially published singles right at the end.

Okay back to Coldplay. It took them a while to get started up, with possibly 1hr between Youth Group and when Chris Martin and the guys came on, progressively the lights dim, at which time everyone would scream.. but anyway... when they finally did come on stage it was quick and with a bang. The guys ran quickly on stage, grabed their instuments and with a background TV counting to 0 from about 500ish and Chris posed against this video pannel, it went completely off! Once the counter hit zero, Chris jumped onto the front of the stage as he hit the chorus.

The whole 90 minutes was wonderful and really shows how professional a band is (after doing 137 shows prior to Adelaide's show), and this experience really is the difference between why they're the superband they are and someone just starting. They played all the classics, Politics, Square On, Yellow (at which large yellow ballons filled with gold-leaf/coloured squares were thrown down which let me tell you looked really really pretty), Clocks, Speed of sound etc etc. Of course they had thier encore, which to be honest was expected (and planned) but it was very well worth it. Chris also ran all the way to the back of the thetre (the silver tix section) and sang there for a bit (at which some of the audience member I'm sure could haredly believe it and some were actually crying!). Coldplay finnished off with and extended version my favourite song on the album Fix You. And like true professionals, bowed off stage to a standing Ovation!

Now Chris, he was seriously on a high, prancing around like usual, which live, really looks like a pixie, but it did remind me strongly of how the boys from the show Dead Poets Society Danced during thier Dead Poets Meeting! But the meer fact that Chris was enjoying himself and having a blast made everyone, or at least me, definately enjoy the atmosphere. Oh and is he flexible or what.. every so often he'd bend back on his knees to lie on the floor or over the piano stool, it was amazing :P.

The only thing missing was a real "human" connection between Chris and the audience. Now granted he's a shy fellow, and doesn't really like "attention", but i guess I was expecting more interplay between the band and the audeince. But to be fair, there was some back and forth, spelling out Adelaide in one of his songs and during mid-session setup the band took photos of the crowd on disposable cameras before desposing them into the standing crowd. The singing and music was spot on (except for the accoustic bit where the dummer's gituar didn't work and in the words of Chris Martin "Professionalism People, Professionalism") And everyone got into it!

Oh and I must comment on the wide range of people there, all equally represented in volume. There were young'uns, alternative grungers, pop princesses, school kids, professionals, older people, all there for one reason to watch coldplay. I guess as someone told me, you really have made it when your music reaches out to everyone, no matter what age and from what background.

I throughly enjoyed myself, and even though the prices of tix were a lot more expensive than usual, it was well worth it. Would I go see them again? Without a doubt. One of the best concerts I've been to.

Rating: 9.5/10
