Man, I've been working my butt of... and I feel good doing it. I'm not real big on the physical labor stuff. At least not out in the sun. The sun and I are on bad terms. But I love doing things that aren't the norm. You don't move a library every day, and I certainly wouldn't want to, but I have been having fun these past couple of weeks lifting and carrying and just working hard and pushing my body to its limits. I actually trembled from exhausting yesterday. Part of it was working hard on Wednesday, not sleeping at all that night (cause I was worried about my final, some homework I never did, and all the work that still had to be done) and the working all Thursday. I was up 36 hours straight doing some heavy work, and that is what it took to knock me down. I slept for 11 hours last night. I closed my eyes and the next thing I remember was my alarm going off. That is awesome.
It is weird the concern a lot of my co-workers are showing for me though. They really have this idea that I'm going to hurt myself permanetly cause I can lift twice or three times what they can or sustain working without a break longer than they can. I appreciate their concern, don't get me wrong, but it is hard for me to get them to understand that I'm not doing more than I can't handle. I do know my limits and I like to go to them. If I can't carry something or I can't handle lifting something, I'm not trying to impress anyone... I'll drop it or not try. If I can handle it, than I'm going to do it. At least I'm not the only one they are showing the same concern for. I have some other co-workers who are just as strong (if not stronger) than I am and they certainly push themselves as well. Some of them even have medical conditions that they just ignore. Personally I'd rather they just let me do what I can and if I get hurt than oh well. I'm younger and can heal faster. That isn't a wisecrack or anything, it is fact. I heal faster than someone twice my age... so I'd rather be the one to get hurt than them.
I have heard some comments about me trying to impress everybody from people whose opinions I could care less about. Maybe it is a male stereotype that we all love testasterone and machismo, but I'm not going to get it on with, nor would I want to get it one with, any of my co-workers... so who am I trying to impress? I'm certainly not trying to impress myself... so there isn't anyone left. I just want to get the job done. If my carrying 15 boxes in the time it takes everyone else to carry 5 gets it done, than that is what I'm going to do. If lifting an entire shelf off the ground on one side needs to be done and I can do it alone while everyone else gets the other side... than that is what I'm going to do.
I can't help but wonder how much slower or how much harder the work would be without me around. Since I'm holding up my end and there is little to compare it too it makes me wonder just how much I'm actually doing. I guess that is the way it always is... either way it has been a lot of fun and a good change of pace.
Maybe that's why I love working with kids... it is never the same with them... no matter how many times you do it.
