WELL, I am certainly awake now.
Good gravy.
I went to my usual little gas station this morning before work to fill up. I get out, keys in hand, and prepare to start pumping my gas. I leave my car door open, and start fueling. I glance over the pump and I see this guy in a hoodie running towards me. I look at him to see if I recognize him, because I'm thinking to myself "why is this guy running right towards me?" He's less than 10 feet from me when the wind blows my car door shut, I glance over and watch it close. I glance back, and look him right in the eye, as he changes his direction slightly to his right, and darts right by me. I think he has an umbrella in his hand, but I don't really look, I'm looking at his face, and then just the back of him in general as he takes off by me.
I watch him jump over a little fence, and then he must have gotten stuck on something, because he seemed to just stay there. 'Well, whatever weird dude' is pretty much what I think at that point and continue pumping. Then I look across the street and I see these 2 guys pointing very aggressively in the direction the guy just went. And looking off to the side, as if they are guiding someone there.
So I peek around my pump, and just as I do a police officer holding up a shotgun comes into view. He just barely glances at me, then walks right by my car in the direction the running guy just went, where he is scanning intently with his eyes. Just as he gets to the rear of my car, he shouts "Put your hands up!" "Drop to the ground!"
And just as he does that, I stop pumping and jump in my car, then I call Vince, because I'm freaked out and don't know what else to do. Heh. I started with an 'oh my god oh my god' but thought better of it and immediately said 'no, I'm fine, there's this thing going down at the gas station...' And honestly, I don't even remember what I said after that. Within seconds there were at least 10 cop cars around me, with 6 or 7 more cops running by me, some with pistols, some with shot guns. Then I saw the guy, arms behind his back and 3 officers around him, being escorted to one of the cars. Then I'm thinking "I don't think that was an umbrella in his hand."
I got on the road to get to work. I was a little stunned and had something of an adrenaline rush, then about halfway to work it kind of hit me. I think that guy was going to jump in my car. I didn't think it at the time, I didn't have time to. But after the fact, putting the scene together in my head again, it seems to fit. He stopped running towards me when the wind closed my car door. I actually got dizzy and felt a little faint after that, and thank goodness I was pretty much in the office parking lot by then.
I'll tell you what, I won't need any coffee this morning.
