It was not rare to see Stephen lapse into long period of silence during one of the Captain’s dinners. While sank deep in reverie, gathering wool, as he would say, Stephen would often ponder on human nature. Tonight, as he observed the men around the table as they talked, ate and drank, he reflected upon whether their eating habits could foretell other behaviors. As food was often associated with carnal pleasure by numerous metaphors, he wondered if a man ate his food like he made love. Stephen gazed at Jack Aubrey, eating ravenously, obvious delight painted on his sanguine face. His mouth watered.
