News from the Midwest

This weekend, the heat index in Chicago was 115. And humid. Please do not complain about the dry heat in Los Angeles. Needless to say, I'm glad I didn't go to Lollapalooza (and, in fact, didn't leave the house until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday). Instead, I went to Intonation last weekend, where two days of awesome music cost $25. The Go! Team were as hyperactive as the exclamation mark in their name indicates, the Hold Steady were like Rhett Miller meets Allen Ginsberg meets classic rock, Out Hud was a hugely fun dance party, the Wrens can only be described as complete pros, and I even liked the Decemberists, surprisingly enough. Pretty much amazing, and my only contact with ironic t-shirts and artfully messy hair all summer. I got to show my physics friends what my real life is like.

Speaking of my real life, I'm not sure if I want to go back. Once you get over the lack of social skills, everyone at Fermilab is amazingly nice and even interesting (if you can get them to talk). I love science so much...

I also love the CD rightfully entitled The Best Mash-Ups in the World Ever Are from San Francisco. Buy it/download it/borrow it from me immediately, because I promise that you cannot live another day without it.

I saw the Dan Flavin retrospective at MCA and March of the Penguins on Saturday. Dan Flavin is really meant to be seen in person; it sounds obvious, but I didn't realize that the art was more about the light than about the shapes made by the bulbs until I saw the show. March of the Penguins taught me that humans are weak, and made me wonder how we even survived those first few winters. Granted, we were in Africa and not Antarctica, but it still must have been tough.

I need to buy food. I have figured out how to go shopping for only a few things ever few days, but then there is always that day where you have pretty much nothing. Which is today. Trader Joes, you are calling my name.
