Hee. I rented the newish movie version of Phantom of the Opera tonight because I hadn't seen it and the Wicked love has refreshed my love of musicals, but anyway, its kind of awesome and aweful at the same time. Its like, Phantom of the Opera: The Music Video! (the exclamation point is crucial), because its all lavish and lovely and everyone is gorgeous and its filled with english actors that I like, but almost entirely lacking in actual musical magic (which I'm finding hard to explain, but I think is not just due to it being a movie obviously as movies are kind of a bastion of musicals). I don't know!

Before that I watched Megalodon, starring Robin Sachs and that guy who played Badger on Firefly (among others). Horrible, and not even in the best bad shark movie way (see Deep Blue Sea and even more so Dark Waters), but with like random moments of goodness that had nothing to do with the shark. Okay and it was also very funny how they felt the need to basically steal random scenes from Jaws in a kind of WTF way.

But now I go back to the movie.

ETA:
Simon Callow and Ciaran Hinds rule, hee! I adore SC for so many many reasons, but I don't know that I'd ever even seen CH being funny before, usually he's some degree of dark and broody (checks imdb listing, random hee because his mother's name is Moya, and yep) and also love for Minnie Driver.
All the leads are very very pretty, but well, kind of blandish?, even the Phantom, which is sad, because I like that actor too.

EATA:
Okay so both the actors playing Christine and the Phantom won me over at the end (for some reason Gerard Butler did so much better after he lost the mask, I even got a bit sniffly) and I kind of felt bad that the Phantom was murderous and crazy and well never really had a chance with her. The whole thing puts me in a very 14 year old girl omg drama! kind of mood. So tragic! Etc.
Heh, its funny, but I'd never actually seen it on stage, just listened to the soundtrack a bunch so it was weird seeing how some songs fit in. Also, the Phantom's opera kind of really sucks. Except I liked the last bit.

movies, shark movies
