Finished Wicked!
I really loved it, much more than I was expecting to from the beginning, when its dissimilarity from the musical was rather a distraction. And I warmed to the section in the Vinkus much more than I thought I would too, it was simply, I think, that I had expected her work in the Emerald City to be more important to the plot and at first was anxcious to get back to it and see what it all meant, but once I accepted that it wasn't really and just was what it was, I quite enjoyed the whole of it.
The part that got to me the most at the end was her belief that the scarecrow was Fiyero, because primed by the musical I thought it was entirely possible that he was! After all both the Lion and the Tin Woodsman were from her life (though their incidentalness should have been a hint there) and so why not him and I got rather teary once she realized that it couldn't be true. Yes, I'm a total sop.
Another reason I liked the Vinkus section so much was that it felt like finally we were hearing from Elphaba herself, rather than other people filtering her (which I think I grumbled about earlier) and it was nice, because the earlier sections had done much more to build a kind of mystery about her and then the Vinkus section kind of took that appart.
Thats all I can think of for the moment, I think I need to chew on it for a while to figure out the rest of what I think about it. But I am excited for the sequel! Son of a Witch is supposed to come out at the end of September, so I suppose its sort of perfect timing.
Has anyone read Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister or Mirror, Mirror and are they any good?
Hee, have renewed journal and added a bit more for icon slots, yay! Now I just need to er, actually make them.
ETA:
Its interesting that having seen the musical first I was very aware while reading the book not only of the difference, of course, but also what the sources of those differences seemed to me to be.
First off, characters were combined a lot.
Averic + Fiyero = Fiyero
Boq + Nick Cutter = Boq
Frex + Thropp = Elphaba and Nessarose's father
Madame Morrible + Yackle = Madame Morrible (??)
And there's certainly something of Sarima in the musical version of Glinda, in both her youthful silliness and obviously the romantic connection with Fiyero.
Elphaba also becomes the Witch in a very different way too in the book, but I'm still working my way around that.
Nessarose is almost completely altered
