Gotta love the Reedies

So, zoom forward a few days. Fieldwork's been going pretty well. Again, not sure about the Katrina argument. It's still there, but I'm not sure how strong or to what extent. Regardless, I'm getting interesting data and that is a good thing in its own. The point of the thesis is to learn stuff, non?

Anyway, I'm totally a lightweight. I'm slightly intoxicated as I type this, having gone out for drinks and an interview in the upper 9th (finally I get to see this neighborhood) with a semi-olde reede fella, class of '90. I had a really good time! That was a fun, fun conversation. In fact, today was reedie day. I met up with 3 reedies for interviews, one from the 70s, one from the mid-80s, and the latter from '90. First one wasn't very fun, but last two were pretty much a blast. Gotta love the Reedies.

In other news, I am confused. There's just something about this city; I don't even know precisely how it is that one goes about characterizing it, if one goes on such a quest at all to begin. Someone in the wine shop I was just in made a good point that has been bothering me since: something along the lines of, "See you next time. You'll be back. If you care enough to write a thesis on it, you'll be back. It will haunt you in your dreams."

The thing is, I think she might be right. I don't see myself living here at all. One of the things I was hoping to get out of this trip-- other than data-- was precisely that, an answer as to whether I would be living here again or not. I think not, you see, because I simply can't stand the idea of not being carefree and unconcerned with being mugged at any given point at any given time, but I suspect aforementioned figurative fortune-teller may be right. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes. Damnit, New Orleans!
