Summer time and the living is ...

As usual I seem to have just about struggled to the end of the week and now I just want to sleep all weekend. Not going to happen, of course. I never do sleep much, but at least I have no overnights and no Sams shift tomorrow and exactly no plans for the weekend so I get a lazy couple of days. Yay :)

I finished editing chapter 8 of my magnum opus today! (No, I really don't use the phrase 'magnum opus' seriously :)). As usual, I've read the chapter through so many times now that I have no idea at all if it actually works. I wrote a fair chunk of the last couple of thousand words in New Zealand (one of the good things about doing my first drafts in pen. Your can write pretty much anywhere) and I'm not sure if that fact changed it or not. As it was, the last couple of thousand words are basically smut, but I've spent 3 years and 30000 words getting to this point and it still feels rushed, and I got a little wary about actually going there, to say the least. So it's kind of 'yes/no/yes/no' and then it's finally 'yes' and at that point it became clear that anything even vaguely explicit just wasn't going to fit, so it was down with the curtain. I'm glad, actually.
(There's also the fact that writing good smut is really, really difficult (and rather boring) and I'm out of practice. So despite the fact that the whole point of the story was that it was going to be wrong and filthy, I'm not sorry that, in the end, I couldn't bear to take it there.
So, one more chapter, then an epilogue, and then that'll be that. Just the fact that I've persevered this far and seen it through to the bitter end makes me kind of happy. Of course, in this time, I could be half way through something original, but it's never been about that. Maybe when I've finally finished, I'll go all self-indulgent and talk about exactly why I'd want to spend over 3 years of my life writing a 40000 word, Chronicles of Narnia-themed incestuous love story. Because, yeah, putting it like that, it's kind of an odd thing to want to do :p

Got a round-robin email from Scary Mary, the person who oversees the Sams night rota (yes, she is call Mary. And yes she is scary. Actually really nice, and very funny, when you get to know her. But still scary) warning me that it doesn't look like I'll get my 10 overnights in this year. Which, given that I've only done 2, is perfectly possible. But doing a couple in August and a couple in October and one a month for the rest of the year, it should be ok. Fingers crossed. It's so much easier since the time more from midnight till 6am to 10pm to 4am but I still hate the overnights. But the company's usually good.

I want a cigarette. So, so much. Arghhh.
(I smoked 20 or so in New Zealand (no surprise) but I've not smoked any since and I've only had a total of 30 since March 17th. It's yet to not be really bloody hard though.

Having spent ages preparing the second part of the Call of Cthulhu campaign I’m running (Masks of Nyarlathotep) we now have a couple of complete newbies in the group so I need to prep an intro scenario first, which is going to take ages. Hey ho. It’s lucky I enjoy it!

I've just finished the first read through of the story I decided to run and, for the first time ever, I've hit a scene in a published scenario that I'll be editing out for reasons of taste (and given that Call of Cthulhu is a horror game, I'll let you imagine how bad that could be). I know GMs who'd gleefully include it, but it hits a hard limit for me, so.
Anyway, intimation and suggestion is a lot more effective and scary in horror than explicit, mind-mangling ickiness.

Looking foreward to actually role-playing again. It's been too long (we planned on starting again months ago. We've all been a bit distracted, I guess).

What else?

Oh yes, I got a random message on a site I'm on from someone who liked the look of my profile, but who had no location listed. I replied and said it would be lovely to chat, but that I’m a little wary about long distance relationships right now so I really hoped that she’s in the UK. I got a lovely response (she seems really nice) saying that actually right now she lives in Phnom Penh. Um, yeah. Cambodia is closer than New Zealand but it's still really, really far away!

I’ll definitely drop her a line though. Making new friends is nice.

I was pleased but extremely surprised that the same sex marriage bill got through the Lords without a hitch. There are certain areas where I just think the House of Lords will be more inclined to be socially conservative. It's good to be proved wrong. There's so little else to be happy about on the current affairs front right now.

Ages after its release, I've really been getting into Florence and the Machine's Ceremonials. It's a rather fabulous play-it-loud pick-me-up. This is a favourite.
