In the Hands of… The sun shone in through the curtains, far too bright for Skull’s liking and he groaned, burying his face in his pillow. He frowned as something started nagging at him. Was he supposed to be somewhere or something like that?
He sat straight up in bed, grabbing for his clock and knocking it over in the process. When he finally picked it up he stared at it in non-comprehension before the time sank in. 12:03. But… but he was supposed to be on Terra Venture by now! It would have… the colony would have left by now. Why hadn’t Bulkie come to get him when he was late?
Did it matter though? If he was honest with himself, something he tried to avoid whenever possible, he knew that he hadn’t been happy with the idea of going out into space, deep down knowing that he’d be leaving behind something important.
Fishing around on the floor for a clean (relatively clean) set of underwear, Skull’s fingers brushed against something sharp and he jerked them back reflexively, sucking on the tips. Reaching down more carefully he picked up the CD that had fallen open and closed it. Studying the picture of Tanya on the cover, Skull knew what he had to do.
Stumbling through a shower, Skull pushed Bulk and thoughts of abandonment to the back of his mind, focusing only on one thing. Tugging on a pair of faux-army pants and a black shirt, confident that he was mostly presentable, Skull rapidly tied the laces on his boots and was out the door, just over half an hour since he’d got up. About to close the door he heard the phone ring and he paused, then shook his head. Whoever it was could wait, he had something more important to do.
Knocking on the door to Adam’s apartment, ignoring the disapproving looks of the elderly woman who lived next door and the same look of disapproval from the mother of toddlers just back from kindergarten, Skull waited impatiently for an answer. Adam would be in today, he always had Mondays off, lucky SOB, so it was just a matter of waiting for the door to open. Raising his hand to knock again, he was caught off guard as the door opened, Adam standing in the doorway, staring at him in surprise.
“Hi,” he said uneasily. “I didn’t go.” There was no need to mention that he’d overslept.
“So I see,” Adam replied. “Seeing as you’re right here.”
“Yeah,” Skull agreed sheepishly. “Pretty obvious, huh?”
“Pretty much.”
There was a moment of silence, then, “What changed your mind?”
I overslept. “I don’t know,” Skull said, and it was even true to a degree. “I just… there’s stuff here that I haven’t done, stuff I don’t know and it’s kinda stupid to change one set of don’t knows for another.”
Adam grinned. “I guess it is.”
Was that why Adam had been so against Terra Venture? Skull wondered. He’d never pegged Adam for being so Earth-centric when it came to space, or being afraid of the unknown. Maybe later he’d find out.
“Anyway,” Skull continued, gathering up all the courage he could muster, “I was wondering if, you know, we’re still cool.”
“Yeah,” Adam said promptly. “Sure we are.” Like it had never been in doubt. That easy confidence was something Skull envied about the other man.
“Good. Because, you know, things didn’t end so well last time and I’d…” Skull trailed off. “I don’t know what I’m saying.”
“Skull, we’re fine,” Adam reassured him. “I shouldn’t have got so worked up anyway. It was your choice, to go or not. Not mine. I don’t have any say in it.”
“Yeah, you do.” The words were out before Skull realised his lips were moving and he froze. Had he really just said that?
Adam was staring at him, mouth slightly parted and Skull was pretty sure he’d never seen Adam quite so floored. It was kinda… cute, actually. “I do?”
Skull licked his lips nervously and nodded. “Yeah. You do.”
Adam stared some more, then seemed to realise they were still standing in the doorway, having what was looking more and more like a private conversation in public. “I think we should finish this inside,” he said and Skull nodded.
“Good idea.”
