Walter Chesnut

May 10, 2007 02:42

Last week, Walter Chesnut passed away. This was a huge blow to UMass, and to the larger musical community. He was a wonderful man, an asset to all music, and an inspiration to all who knew him. Despite the challenges he faced in life, he stayed true to himself, and to his music, overcoming obstacles that would have, literally, crippled most people.

He truly lived what he taught, and his strength will be missed.

At a retirement celebration in 2001, one of his former students, Linda Hannum said, “His lessons transcend mere scales and arpeggios. He teaches us to be true to ourselves, to live with passion, to give more than anyone else expects of you, to be your best even if your best is not the best, and to be better today than you were yesterday. His message is timeless.”(Taken from the obituary)

He will be missed.
