I've been doing as much Yuletide reading as I can this evening since I'm not sure I'll get another uninterrupted stretch of time to do this after today!
...and yet, I'm only up to D. Aaaaah.
(I'm logging these recs over at
pinboard as I go, but I'll be collecting them into posts too.)
Kippers and Whistles (Liz Lemon/Wesley Snipes, 30 Rock)
Ahahah this is fantastic! Liz and Wesley's voices and characterisation and their terrible relationship are just perfectly conveyed in this and it's so so funny. :D And then the ending is really lovely and yet so in-character.
The Idea of Love (Louis/Prior, Angels in America)
This does such a great job of navigating the backstory of the complicated relationship between Louis and Prior, and the pain and the comfort in having someone like that in your life. The details in this - love it, it just colours Prior's fantastic voice throughout, gives all this rich background without letting up on the pace.
The Other Half (Earl/Vito, Animal Factory)
Oh, I was so happy when I saw that there was an Animal Factory story, and even more since it's great. I like the wistfulness with which Earl thinks back upon Ron, and also the easy-going honesty he has with Vito, the way prison life, his life, goes back to normal in the aftermath. The sparse, low-key tone works perfectly for the source
Michael Caffrey (Billy, Michael; Billy Elliot)
Beautiful; it's so true to Billy and Michael's voices, even as they grow up, and the ending, their friendship still strong after all that time, is just so lovely.
(Between this and
my own wonderful gift-story, I'm loving the small peak in great Billy Elliot fics. Yay!)
Turn a New Page, Tear the Old One Out (Brian/Bender, Breakfast Club)
This is so so awesome; it's such a good, involving read. Even the painful things that propel Bender to something better - it's terrible but I love there's a realism as things get better, as Bender navigates his way to happiness. Brian and Bender at the end is so sweet and lovely as well.
even the stars hide away (Troy/Abed, Community)
Oh, this is gorgeous - Troy and Abed when no one are looking except themselves, at each other. I love that there's a hesitancy in how they fit into each other's lives beyond the two of them, but there's also this feeling that whatever the problem is, they'll face it together.
The Sinister Scheme of Sneezy Batman (Troy, Abed, Annie; Community)
Aaah, this is the cutest. I love imagining how Sneezy Batman (omg the name) would look and then imagining Troy's vapours at it. :DDDDDD So funny but also very in-character and the ending is so lovely.
Elementary Murder Mystery Analysis (Community)
Fantastic! I could see this playing out as a real episode, and everyone's voices is so in character, and the dialogue is so much fun. And then I got to a particular Chang-related pun (you'll know it when you see it) and I may have had to stop reading to laugh myself silly for a few minutes. :D
how we spin (and spin) (Kate/Doug, Cutting Edge)
LOVE. I don't think I could want anything else from this fandom but a lovely, happy post-movie fic and this fits the bill perfectly - in love, but still so very much their selves, so there's still small conflicts that could arise, but ultimately giddy with the fact they've found each other. And the ending makes me grin so much. :D
(I also have to thank
sinden and
pollymel who showed us this movie a few weeks ago - how have I lived so long without knowing the joys of this movie? How??)
Flash Paper (Discworld)
Fantastic! It sounds so much like canon, the story is so much fun, I love the complicated, useful inner workings of the Watch (and Vimes' mind) and the footnotes are great.
Hen Party (Discworld)
I love Granny in this story, and the wonderful understanding between her and Tiffany. Also, this story is a scream - the idea of Nanny Ogg organising a Hen night is both horrifying and wonderful and it is exactly that and so much fun. Great read.
It Could Be You (Moist/Adora, Discworld)
Author's summary: "Moist von Lipwig is taking on a new project, but this time his big idea is a load of balls." This is beautiful! Both Moist's brain and solution to all his problems, and the wonderful art and ideas throughout.
Harmless (Discworld)
This is so much fun - everyone's in character and the voices are just right. Love the city working together to find the perpetrator. Plus I really love Vetinari's musings on the romanticism of vigilantism in a mostly lawless city - and how in Ankh Morpork, it would never work (or be allowed).
