Shiny post, even though I always feel guilty for not being vegan. I have a friend who's a beekeeper but doesn't do that sort of thing at all. Would you eat honey if you knew the bees weren't suffering?
I feel guilty sometimes for not being more vegan(!), but I try not to feel that way because it's ultimately unproductive & I think the important thing is doing what you can. It's a shame that it's (some) people who care who end up feeling guilty and that people who don't care, don't!
Ah well, I'll just keep reading stuff about veganism that focuses on compassion & recognising what people do instead of criticising what we don't, and posting the links.
I'm always really glad to hear that there are some people who treat their animals, insects etc well. Bounce!
I doubt I would eat honey even if I was satisfied that the bees were being treated well, as I think I'd still feel like I was taking advantage of them - they're making the honey for themselves, not for me. I'm not particularly enamoured with honey though (I like it, but it wasn't a hard decision for me to stop eating it); if it were something I really liked I might consider having it under those circumstances.
I like being vegan, when I can. But as I'm working through a lot of issues relating to my eating behaviours, I've accepted that I need to cut myself some slack and not feel the need to be perfect 100% of the time. But I think the intention is important, as is the effort
( ... )
I double-check things with manufacturers sometimes, but sometimes I'm too busy/lazy. Thank you for the inspiration.
As to the clothes issue, yeah, it's a tough one. I've not bought any clothes in ages (or shoes in years) because of this. I decided a few months ago that I'll just buy stuff from cruelty-free places (probably expensive) & charity shops (& other second-hand places - probably cheap). Hopefully this approach will sort of balance things out economically, whilst also not contributing to the demand for unethically produced clothing.
Seems like you're doing exactly what I advocate - trying your best & making a big contribution on the stuff that you've identified as most important, without letting it drive you crazy.
Far from minding, I welcome comments - thank you! Especially lovely, nice, well-written, thoughtful ones. Thank you, keep them coming... ;) *giggle*
Seriously though, thank you, that means a lot to me. I wrote it wanting to explain to those who don't share my views, but without being sanctimonious, preachy or seeking to convert. I'm really glad that I seem to have succeeded.
Bounce!

PS It's also a ridiculously long post, thanks for reading it!
