[Accidental Video] ℵ First Sunset

[ All that could be seen from the CLD's viewpoint when it snapped on was a dimness. And perhaps if they looked hard enough, the viewer could see something resting against it although what was hard to make out. When the owner finally spoke up, their voice was distant. ]

I should have known it wouldn't be that easy... What a joke. [ The grimace in ( Read more... )

It's a high-ranged communicative device, but it appears to have a lot more functions than just that. For the moment, all you really need to know is that it's capable of ranged and targetted communication. Kind of like a telephone, but with a broadcast option, which is what you've just used.

Well, actually it's more like a computer you wear on your wrist, but it's kind of complicated.

[ Range and targeted communication. Meaning he could talk to multiple people or one person in particular. Not that he was really planning on using it much. Or was he...? Seemed like he was figuring out more about things through these people than anyone he had come across so far... Not that he had spoken to many in the first place. As in maybe one person who looked at him funny. ]

A computer? What else can it do?

Uh, let's see... From what I can tell, it's pretty highly developed. Map, flashlight, radio... It even has games. Oh, and a Geiger counter. I'm still working on finding out more.

Hm... [ A map... A map was always good. The other things? He wasn't sure how useful they would be, but he figured that he would fiddle with it some more now that he knew more about it. Though... ]

A Geiger counter? [ That... sounded like something way out of left field. ]

That's right. A counter for measuring radioactivity in the area. It works by measuring ionizing radiation in particles. Very few of them can detect alpha particules, but I have yet to find out if this one actually can or not.

[ ...

Wait, what? Yeah, okay. Might be a little... lost in... translation. ]

...What's radioactivity? [ Seemed like something he should know with how complicated this all sounded. ]

...you don't know what radioactivity is?

[He sounds honestly stunned. It takes him a few minutes to think of how to word it.]

Radiation is the emission of rays and particles from nuclear material. It's undetectable without these meters, but it can lead to all sorts of health problems and can even kill if you get exposed to too much. Even a small dose of it can be very dangerous.

[ Yes... Yes. You heard that write. ...A-Awkward. So awkward. Half-tempted to say something in his defense but then the man continued on and Roxas silenced himself.

...

...So whatever it was, it came from something nuclear. And if one was around it long enough... He had to just take a moment... to digest that information. Finally though. ] Is it common here then? [ Because that would explain why something like that was built into the device he received from whoever... right? ]

I don't know. I haven't been here long myself. But if they have geiger counters built into this... there's a pretty big chance. If you start to hear an odd noise, kind of like crackling, get away from there. That's the geiger counter detecting radiation. If it starts to get louder, go the other way.

Got it. [ 'Thanks' might have been more appropriate, but it hadn't really hit him to be considerate with his mind wandering as it was. Particularly on one detail. ]

So, you're not from here either? [ His voice carried a hint of disbelief. Who else wasn't from this world...? And how did they get there anyway? ...Maybe he should have given those pamphlets a once over. ]

There's a few people that aren't. I've been listening in on a few unlocked conversations - rude, I know, but it's on an open frequency.

Last I knew it was Earth in 1974, and now... Boston of the far future. It's like a movie or something.

[ Don't mind this kid while the whole formalities comment went flying straight over his head. But then he was an eavesdropped himself by nature.

Don't mind his quiet either as he tried to collect his thoughts. Earth... That didn't ring a bell. But he did add up that Boston must have been a part of it at least. Something this guy had seen before, but... of the far future? So... Did that mean. ]

So, you're from here then? [ K-Kind of silly question, but he was trying to piece together things. Slowly... He traversed worlds, not times, after all. ]

[Huey had no qualms about listening to open transmissions while he worked. Information was important, after all.]

A version of it. I-it's not like this back home. Far from it. It's like... like an alternate dimension. Another world.

[ True enough. Information was much of the reason why Roxas was still talking to people, after all.

Alternate world... He hadn't heard of that before... but... ] So... It's like your world. But it's not. Weird...

So, what makes it different then?

It's... hard to explain. From the looks of it, this world is... damaged. Probably due to nuclear weaponry, judging from the inclusion of the geiger counter and what damage I can see. I can't go outside, so I can't tell much about it - they stopped me right away. But from what I can see... and from the technology... it's quite possibly the future of my world.

Damaged...? Nuclear weaponry? [ Just... It was that powerful? But then. If it could erase them with its radiation, was it really much of a stretch to consider it could cripple the world as well?

[ Future....

Even despite the damage though... Was that the only reason why they wouldn't let them outside? ] There could be something out there though, couldn't there? [ Like a way back. ]
