Fusion Centers (and not the energy kind)

Fusion Centers are "state, local and regional intelligence centers, funded and staffed in part by the federal government, that represent the latest manifestation of a growing national surveillance apparatus." Basically, they're collaborations between agencies who want to determine where the next big threat is coming from.

That sounds great, right? A lot of minds putting their heads together to keep America safe. Unfortunately, as is typical of government, what seems good on paper has had less than stellar results in practice.

A Missouri Fusion Center released a report saying people with Ron Paul bumper stickers or who supported third party candidates like Bob Barr or Chuck Baldwin were likely dangerous militia people. They later retracted the report and apologized, but that it even saw print was a big head scratcher. (Imagine my surprise to find out Missouri thinks I might be a terrorist! Yeesh.)

The Texas Fusion Center came out in February 2009 and said Cynthia McKinney (2008 Green Party presidential candidate) and Ramsey Clark (former Attorney General) are helping terrorists by promoting "tolerance."

Yes, really.

Apparently tolerance for others helps the terrorists win. I guess that's why the Taliban and Al-Qaeda have demonstrated such incredible levels of understanding and respect for their fellow man. "When you love your brother, you're loving TERRORISM!"
