i am learning english in hindi. i have acquired a very fun 2-way english-hindi dictionary (from the 'teach yourself' series. it's quite unique because it provides the romanised reading of the hindi word next to the hindi script which is totally amazing for lazy people such as myself.

my hindi tutor assigned me the task of learning the vowel script last week. vowels are funny because they have their 'full form' when they begin a word...such as *amar* and then an abbreviated form between letters, such as the second "a" in *amar*.

(the dictionary is also quite incomplete - i know *amar* means "forever", but the words "forever" and "eternal" are not to be found).

anyways, reading is still kind of overwhelming. i see newspapers and magazines in hindi and still feel it is an impossible task. but i did read my first few hindi words yesterday. the first hindi word i read was "la-n-ch". lunch. phata-phat. fast. (an advert for some snack product). the second hindi word i read was for a restaurant sign "ch-k-n". (i think there was some vowel, but y'know, the light turned green). chicken? did i read "chicken"? it's quite funny - i jump into the unknown and painstakingly decipher script and come back with a word i already knew but wearing a different accent.
