8 become 7

The opening Remembrance Sunday pro routine showed the power of restraint from the creative team (which won’t last next week as it’s Musicals Week) with just a voice and piano. (Interesting to learn from ITT that Neil comes from a military background, and probably not the time to remember racism during the second world war when Cameron opened the routine or wonder how many civilian husbands supported their servicewomen wives during the 40s, really.,,and yeah, I’m critiquing a Strictly routine I mostly liked for being anachronistic.) The routine, which started off with some mime, got dancier and dancier - the lift over the table was spectacular.

Sadly the presenters and judges all went for restraint too, except perhaps for Motsi, but it’s not like strong, metallic shoulders are a radical departure for her. I occasionally tried to work out what colour Anton’s jacket was.

Recap: bottom five got mixed comments, top three got praise. Fair enough.

First batch called safe: Rose and Rhys, so I didn’t feel bad about forgetting to vote, and then, tellingly, Dan. Interesting that this was the week the public ran out of reasons to vote for Sara and Aljiaz.

At least James Blunt wasn’t singing ‘You’re Beautiful’ - he has a military connection, doesn’t he? While Grazziano and Luba danced beautifully, I didn’t feel like the choreography was telling the story of the song.

The judges’ talk with Claudia revealed nothing except that Shirley was so busy dancing along and looking at Motsi that John could have slipped in a couple of mistakes and she wouldn’t have noticed. Whoops, moving on.

Amy celebrated like she was Kevin Clifton about being called safe, while Tom looked faintly embarrassed; they tortured John and Johannes, and the two couples who’d been at the bottom were left to hear their fate. AJ got the reprieve, while Tilly looked more resigned to being in the dance-off this time around. Pep talk from Shirley - interesting given that she wouldn’t have voted to save Tilly last week.

Claudia made the kind of joke she would once make about B-------l about musicals week.

Tilly was very focused in the reprise, and I concentrated really hard on Sara’s Argentine Tango and couldn’t call it because Tilly wasn't quite Ann Miller and they'd liked the AT more before, but the judges seemed to be agreed. Possibly Tilly had a better feel for the dance at heart, possibly dancing in the dance-off before helped, or maybe having her dad there. Sara was gracious, and I could well imagine her continuing to do ballroom, at least. Possibly also extensions. If Aljiaz gets couples’ choice next year, he should ask Gio’s advice. Slightly not-on-the same page last dance.
