the secrets we don't keep

On Monday, I went to see The Hunger Games - Catching Fire. I haven't read the books, so I'm a movieverse fan. I choked up three timesRue-Katniss-Primrose-that hand gesture FEELINGS, was perhaps not as struck as when I saw the first film, but I think that's down to it being a sequel. I have a fuller (lengthy) review that I may or may not post, but if anyone wants to chat about it in the comments, feel free.

Last Tango in Halifax is back for its second series, and last night I caught up on the first episode just in time to watch the second live.

The show picked up where it left off, and everything was complicated.

John’s midlife meltdown is less sympathetic than everyone else’s selfishness because Judith is an alcoholic and HIS KIDS and he’s acting younger than they are.

Gillian’s bad behaviour is probably helped by her being played by Nicola Walker, although I wished someone would buy her a punchbag to stop her mouthing off by the end of the second episode.

It’s a good cast all round, but Anne Reid in particular made the dialogue seem really natural.

Oh, and you can tell they’ve had a little more budget for the BAFTA and the ratings because of all the helicopter shots.

Episode 2 was a bit frantic with everything - I really liked Ellie in labour and wished we’d known her for longer, although, come on, as if the family wouldn't know who her grandad was.

There were two flashbacks, after one in the first episode, which seems to have become a thing.

Afterwards, though, I wondered if I’m really bothered enough with the characters and what they're going through to keep up with this show, compared with how invested I am, despite myself, in The Mentalist and how excited I am by Person of Interest and Borgen.
