I've been holding off from talking about FNL, because I had what could be contained in a paragraph to say. Seemed a bit much to just post that.
Spoilers for 'It's Different For Girls'
Although I missed the ep before (schedulers' fault) recaps and them showing the Matt/Julie kiss in the previouslies helped. Matt and Julie are hitting all my cute buttoons spectacularly, and Coach's reaction is vastly amusing, as is Julie's reaction to his. That makes me happy. Tyra is of the awesome and there were moments where Jason and Tim were such gentlemen. I tried very hard not to think of Bring it On. Coincidentally, I have an audio version of The Odessey that I'm listening to.
American Idol is good TV to watch if you're sleep-deprived (I'm caught up now, thankfully). So, Bon Jovi Week: UK version
What was the point of Rachel Hunter? She about admitted that she was pointless, except for generic stuff about being under this kind of pressure to perform. She didn't even remember what lyrics are. Couldn't they, being in LA, have got a singer or musician to add some insight, instead of saying who they liked, only being more big haired, blonde and photographed than Joe and Jane Bloggs? I'm sure there are plenty of Brit bands/singers trying to 'make it in the US' who would love to help out.
Randy was confused as to why the non-rocker constestants had been so good. I'm not sure if they were all quite as good as the judges said, actually, but I think the answer is in the bluesy feel of the songs, which JBJ emphasised. At the start of the performances, I just thought it would be a confirmation of my prejudices/long-held dislikes - as in I like Melinda and Blake the most, I am turning on Jordin because everyone loves her and over-rates her slightly and some of the things she pulls on stage while singing are gauche. I like Phil's voice. At times. I think LaKisha is stupid and that is partly why she fails to get songs and channel that awesome voice, and Chris is the weakest left. That last is a given. So, going in, I um, wanted Chris and LaKisha to leave. The performances changed my mind - based on them, Jordin should have gone, not Phil IMO.
Let's go singer to singer to 'splain that. While he got hyperbolic praise from Randy et Paula (quelle surprise) that was the best I've heard Phil sing, his voice soared and he sold it. I think Simon calling him fake ON THIS SHOW was a waste of everyone's time. Of course, the fact that later on, Phil made a quip about hoping the Queen wasn't watching the show, because knowing that David Hasselhoff did was enough pressure may have made me take him to heart. So, yeah, I thought it was a little unfair that he was sent back to sing with his sailor boys. Although I didn't hear last week's performances. There is that, plus that everyone is voting for long-held favourites.
But Jordin? Cute li'l Jordin? A bit screechy listening back on the later clips. I found her boring when she was singing, and there was this whole issue of how she dressed and how she was trying to project as a rocker girl, except we all knew she wasn't and it was a failure at even the show's level of inauthentic authenticity.
LaKisha didn't win me back with the ending. It may be because I missed the Dreamgirls performance, but she's consistently failed to pull it off for me, (I may have supported Melinda too long and hard to be fair). Blake was next, wasn't he, and...I don't know what I think. brave is the main word that springs to mind, but as to personal reaction? While I thought the beatboxing was astounding, and I thought it was admirably canny - he kept the chorus that we all know and love - and different and exciting (and the girls may need to pull out the a capella card so he doesn't have that over them) I have no idea if I liked it.
Melinda joined Phil in looking like the most comfortable with the material. I would hate for her to get labelled as Tina Turner, and I think she needs to get an anthemic song next week, but I love her. Chris - well I liked the looks to camera Pointless Hunter called cheesy, and he sang it quite well, but as Simon said, accurately enough, he did as well as he could have done, but the others were better.
So on one level, I'm not shocked that we got this result - it was the one we thought we would, these women have been stronger overall. I think it's unfair on Phil, though he may have been flattered by the themes of the past few weeks. Has Blake got more to offer (what I like about him and Melinda is that they are smart about how they approach their songs, you can tell, whereas LaKisha needs JBJ to explain the kernel of a song to her, when that idea is not that difficult)? I hope yes.
The results shw was full of filler - and if the Tony Blair Comic Relief sketch made me cringe, the Bushes made me writhe. We were also reminded that Idol Gives Back had far too many mentions of Sanjaya. That singer singing that falsetto song scared me, because he looked like a mutant hybrid of the brothers from Sparks and Orlando Bloom only stretched out. Do American teenyboppers like him? But he's repulsive! I kept hoping he would turn out to be a joke on us all. Here's hoping he never crosses the Atlantic. I liked the Bon Jovi performance, but I wasn't excited about it, I thought everyone praised Blake too much. No group singing bacause of the double eviction, presumably, which makes me sad, because they have all these great vocalists left who sing well together. Many tears, noted if they left no impression on my uncaring heart. The post-eviction interviews were blah and Cat wore a hideous shirt dress.
Falsetto and diva week next week!
