Angel pushes open the bathroom door and halts. She sees her friend hugging the toilet bowl and it tugs at her heart.

“Oh, Sam,” she says, “you look a little green.”

Sam lifts her face to look up at Angel, her eyelids heavy, and murmurs, “I’m okay.”

Angel laughs out, “No. You’re most definitely not.” She kneels down and rubs Sam’s back. “What do you think, are you done in here? You want to head back to your room?”

Sam manages a weak nod, the dark circles under her eyes seeming to darken by the minute. Angel grabs Sam under the arms and lifts her, slipping an arm around her waist to hold her up. Sam leans heavily against her friend and Angel feels like she is dragging a dead weight. She tucks Sam into bed and promises to come back with a thermometer.

Sam tosses and turns, every muscle aching. She regrets not getting the flu shot this year but she simply hadn’t the time what with the VCTF’s heavy caseload this fall. Her mind wanders in it’s feverish state to the last time she had been this ill, when she was still married to Tom.

Sam leans against the front door to close it and loses her balance, falling to the floor. She is woozy and her vision blurs. She manages to stumble into the next room, the living room, before surrendering to sleep.

Two hours later, Tom arrives home to find his wife unconscious on the living room floor. He can tell from the look on her face and her shivering that she has the flu. He gently shakes her awake and peels her off the floor to carry her upstairs.

Sam spends the next three days tossing and turning, half conscious. Between naps, Tom brings her soup or cold compresses for her forehead. He sits with her and sings her to sleep when she wakes from fever induced nightmares and holds her hand. He takes her temperature and feeds her ice cubes when the fever rises. And when Sam’s fever finally breaks and she wakes up, Tom sits there, a smile on his face, and says, “Welcome back” before kissing her.

Angel comes back and sticks a thermometer under her tongue. Sam has been crying, thinking about Tom, missing his touch, wishing he was here to take care of her again. Angel sees the tears drying on her friend's face and misunderstands.

“Oh, Sam, do you feel that rotten? I’m going to call the doctor,” she says, brushing Sam’s damp hair back and away from her face. She wipes Sam’s face with a cold washcloth and leaves it on Sam’s forehead before running off to grab the phone.

Sam’s heart throbs dully in her chest as she holds back more tears, the sharp pain becoming an ache. She imagines Tom is holding her hand and she finally falls asleep.
