Part 1: “If I promise not to fight, at least not tonight, will you stay the night?” ~ Michelle Featherstone// Stay

The sounds of a Puccini Opera floated through Bailey Malone’s temporary apartment. Bailey sat at the corner desk, his face looking haggard as he leaned over the small typewriter. He had been typing for what seemed like an hour, many balled up pieces of paper in the trash can beside him. As far back as he could remember, the page he had just finished seemed the most difficult of his life.

He pulled a sheet of paper he had just finished typing out of the machine, and handed it to his estranged wife who was looming behind him.

His wife was dressed in a black suit that seemed to be one-size too small, a pair of black heart-shaped reading glasses perched on her puggish nose as she quickly scanned over the piece of paper. “This is the right thing to do, Bailey.” She patted his shoulder.

Bailey got up, and poured them both a glass of red wine from the bottle on the table. Her words echoed in his head, and he didn’t answer her. He just handed her a glass of wine.

He hoped resigning from the Bureau would get all the arguments between him and Janet to stop. Most of them seemed to revolve around the time the Bureau took away from his family. In the beginning of their relationship, she had seemed to understand that he was protecting her and the girls by keeping the bad guys off the street. Now, she just claimed he cared more about other people than his own family.

She said all he needed to do was resign, and the separation would be over. He could find a nice nine to five job that kept him home most of the time.

Part 2: “I played the fool today. I just dreamed of vanishing into the crowd. Longing for home again. “ ~Melissa Etheridge // Breathe

Michael Wetherly had been in the Bureau a long time, and seen many agents turn in resignation letters. Usually with a talented agent like Bailey Malone, he would just rip up the letter and send them on their way back to work. He had always thought of Bailey’s wife as a bit of a bitch, and wasn’t surprised that she was forcing him to change his whole life for her.

He wasn’t sure if it would do him any good to talk the younger man out of his decision though. With a deep sigh, he gave Malone his blessing and wished him the best of luck. Secretly, he listed Malone as on sabbatical and didn’t list him as resigned; hoping that Malone would eventually change his mind.

Bailey found himself a job as a security officer. He basically had to sit in front of a bunch of security cameras and monitor a building of several offices. The most disruptive incident he had to handle was a drunken over-zealous ex-boyfriend who wouldn’t accept the fact his girlfriend had broke up with him.

Janet had let Bailey move back into their apartment, and they were getting along like they had when they were first married. He was able to take Frances and Arianna to school each morning, which he hadn’t been able to do consecutively when he worked for the Bureau.

Bailey had even started to take cooking classes on the weekend, and was helping with most of the house chores as Janet’s hours at the paper seemed to get longer and longer. She was working on a very important story. Bailey didn’t begrudge her trying to advance her career, or the relatively quiet of his new life; it was actually refreshing. He especially loved the fact he was getting to spend so much time with his girls, he had missed so much of their growing up already.

So, one day at work, almost nine months to the day when Bailey had quit the Bureau, he was shocked to see the process server call his name. The server handed him the divorce papers quickly, and headed out unsure if Malone would punch him, like some soon to be exes did.

Part 3: “The loss is numbing me. It pierces my chest. And I can’t stop dropping everything.” ~ Alanis Morissette// Simple Together

Bailey kept his security officer job throughout the long and arduous divorce hearings. He thought having a nine to five job and his little apartment, along with as much as he loved his children, would help him get a 50-50 joint custody of the girls.

The hearing didn’t turn out that way. It seemed more to Bailey like he was in a boxing match, and twenty guys had jumped in to single him out. Every motion his lawyer filled was thrown out, and Bailey was almost thrown into jail for contempt at one point as he tried to fight back to a statement Janet had made about his character.

The judge seemed to only want to side with Janet and her attorney, and seemed from the beginning to think Bailey was a horrible father without any evidence to show this. Bailey’s attorney tried to get the case changed to a different judge, but the current judge ripped the motion up right in the courtroom.

Bailey was almost numb when the judge read the verdict.

“Mr. Malone will be stripped of all custody of his two daughters!”

The words would echo in his head for many years afterwards. He couldn’t believe he couldn’t see his kids at all. Bailey wasn’t sure what he had done to make Janet hate him so much, and want to disrupt the girls’ lives so much? They needed their father, and she was denying them that; even after he had done everything she asked.

Two days after the verdict, Bailey was mindlessly flipping through the newspaper when he saw the saw the engagement announcement of Janet and the judge.

Bailey was sitting outside a liquor store debating about getting enough alcohol to keep him sloshed for several days, when a Black Lincoln Town Car pulled up beside him. Michael Wetherly got out of the car, and slid into Bailey’s passenger seat.

Wetherly didn’t say anything, he just handed Bailey back his badge, and got out of the car.

As Wetherly knew would happen, Bailey was back at the work the next day. The young man didn’t seem so excited about his work anymore, and grumpier than before. He also became a lot more callous towards the bad guys, but Wetherly decided it was best not to say anything, as long as Bailey didn’t do anything that would require an I.A.D. investigation.

Wetherly just hoped that one-day Bailey’s daughters would realize how much he had fought like hell for them, but he was sure Janet had already brainwashed their impressionable minds.
