IC Information:
Name: Hershel Layton
Fandom: Professor Layton
Timeline: End of 'Unwound Future'
Age: 37

Appearance: Here is a picture.

Layton's style takes a book right out of turn of the century England: tall brown top-hat rimmed with red cloth, a long brown coat with a high collar, an orange turtleneck, brown pants and, curiously, green sneakers. He has a tanned complexion and under his hat, has light brown hair cut short.

Abilities: Layton has no obvious supernatural ability. His real skill lies in his unparalleled ability for critical thinking, especially when it comes to unraveling a mystery or solving a riddle. He is highly perceptive and well-read.

Personality: Layton seems to be the quintessential British gentleman. Always polite, calm, even-tempered, and a love for tea, nothing seems to faze this professor's mild-mannered personality. But, like every good puzzle, there is more to Layton than meets the eye.

There is stark ingenuity in the professor, that usually manifests itself through his ability to logic out even through the most complex conundrums and mysteries. As the professor says, "Every puzzle has a solution" and Layton won't rest until every mystery is resolved. This highlights another facet of Layton's personality: his steadfast nature. Few things deter him once the professor has decided on something. He'll approach every problem from every angle, for he never believes in letting things go unsolved.

Sometimes, this may make him a little meddlesome. He truly likes to help people when they have a problem, owning this to his belief that "a true gentleman always helps those in need." But he also has a habit of poking his nose into whatever mystery arises. And his "gentleman code" may sometimes clash with a modern setting, especially regarding some of his views on women. He is a complete gentleman to a lady, but his habit of pushing Flora away from danger or leaving her home while Luke and him explore can seem somewhat demeaning. Of course, he means it all in good faith as he sees it as a way to protect her.

He is friendly and polite to anyone he meets, even if that someone is rude back to him or a villain. Rarely does he ever show aggression and isn't an intimidating figure, save if someone he knows is being threatened.

But, Layton has more to his disposal than just his sharp wit. He is a skilled fencer and is quick on his feet, ready to run when the moment calls for it. Luke notes that the Professor's intuition is hardly wrong, especially when concerning danger. He won't hesitate to protect someone even when danger to himself could be likely. This holds especially true to Luke and Flora. If anyone would ever want to push the rare berserk button this professor has, it would be to endanger the children. Layton, while hesitant to do harm normally, would be a force to be reckoned with.

History:

(Here are some more comprehensive overviews of the games in the Layton canon. They are in chronological order.)

The Last Specter
The Mask of Miracles
The Curious Village
The Diabolical Box
The Unwound Future

Layton was a regular teen when he and his parents moved him to the town Stevaino. There, he attended the Saint Burns High School where he would meet Lando Ascad, the friend who would influence him to study and become an archeologist.

When in college, Layton meets Claire Folly, who was studying the physics behind time travel, and the two become sweethearts, with implications that Layton was planning to marry her once he became a professor. However, Claire also had another admirer, Don Paulo, who would come to resent Layton for seemingly taking Claire away from him and would become a rival to Layton later in life. Layton finishes his studies and becomes a fully-fledged Professor of Archeology at twenty-seven, the youngest in the university's history. In celebration, Claire gives him his trademark tophat, telling that he must look the part of a 'gentleman professor.' Claire leaves shortly afterwards to work some more on the time machine she and two other scientists, Bill Hawks and Dimitri Allen, were making.

Tragedy strikes the day Layton received Claire's gift. She is killed when is she made to test the time machine so Bill Hawks could cash in on sponsorships, despite being warned of the unreadiness of the machine by Dimitri.  It blows up with her still inside and the resulting explosion takes out a nearby apartment complex. Layton is overcome with grief. In his grief, he investigates the political schemes surrounding the accident. He was almost beaten to death when his investigations struck too close to upper-tier politics and the notes on his investigation were almost wholly destroyed.

While still not letting go of the matter, Layton decides to put it on hold and investigate another mystery at the request of an old school friend, Clark Triton. He solves the mystery with the help of his assistant Emmy Altava and the mayor's son Luke Triton, who asks to become Layton's apprentice after the adventure.

Luke and Layton go on a few more adventures, including one that involved unraveling the curious happenings in a village called St. Mystere. There, Layton unofficially adopts Flora Reinhold after fulfilling Baron Reinhold's requests for a suitable guardian for his daughter. With Flora in tow, the three investigate an ominous relic called the Elysian Box that links back to an enigmatic town with rumors of a vampire rampant in his populace. Once back in London, Layton and Luke along with Prime Minister Bill Hawks and various other members of the upper-crust are invited to see the unveiling of a working time machine. The scientist, going by Dr. Stahngun, asks the Prime Minister to test the time machine which he does. There is seemingly a mishap and the scientist along with the Prime Minister disappear when the machine explodes.

A mysterious letter written by what seems to be Luke Triton ten years into the future appears. Layton believes these two events must be connected and decided to meet at the clock shop the letter requests the Professor to visit. There is a large clock in the middle of the shop and when the shop owner pulls the lever, the shop quakes and disorients the pair. When they leave, Layton and Luke come to realize they are not in the London they know but a London ten years in the future and one that is corrupt and dirty. Following further instruction relayed to them through Future Luke's various friends, Layton and Luke finally see the adult Luke at a casino in the city. Here, Big Luke (as Layton names him so as not to get confused with Little Luke) informs them that the man who has turned London into a den of crime and corruption is none other than Hershel Layton himself, ten years into the future.

The trio then began slowly penetrating the crime family surrounding the mysterious Evil Layton and the professor begins to unravel several duplicities. He realizes that they have been horribly deceived. They are not ten years into the future. It was all a ruse seemingly devised by Dimitri Allen who adopted the guise of Dr. Stahngun to get close to and capture Bill Hawks for revenge in Claire's death. However, Layton discovers the plan goes much deeper than that and the true mastermind was none other than the boy posing to be Future Luke, Clive Dove. It turns out he used Dimitri as a pawn in order to exact his own revenge on the politicians and scientists who cause the explosion ten years ago that destroyed his apartment complex and killed his parents. Clive needed the scientists that Dimitri employed to work on the time machine and so, under Dimitiri's nose, had them work on a giant, weaponized mecha as well.

Clive leaves the group, kidnapping Flora in a plan to make Layton hesitate so he could get away, and starts up the mecha, intent on destroying London as a way to 'teach a lesson' about how the progression of science destroyed his own life. With the help of Celeste, a girl claiming to be Claire's younger sister and someone who was investigating the mysteries surrounding Future London as well, Layton, and Luke board the mecha, evading Clive's goons as they head up to the main control room. It turns out this was a trap as well, but with Celste's assistance again they break out and put a stop to Clive's mecha.

After Clive is arrested, Dimitiri reveals that the time machine, the one ten years in the past, was not a failure. It did transport Claire ten years into the future, into Layton's present. At that moment, Celeste reveals that she is actually Claire and that she has not a lot of time to stay as her molecular structure is unbalanced and she will soon be brought back to her own time. She thanks Layton for stopping Dimitri as she believes that further tampering with time, even if it was to stabilize her presence in the present, was breaking the fundamental laws of nature. She says goodbye to Layton one final time and once she disappears, Layton takes off his hat for the first time in the entire trilogy.

Roleplay Sample - Log:

The first thing Layton did after he woke up was check to see if his hat was nearby. There it stood on a metal nightstand, one of the few things decorating the bare and gray room. He scanned the rest of the room. The first thing to come to mind was prison. There were no windows and everything seemed to be in some sort of shade of gray or white. The place didn't exactly exude a friendly air, either.

Layton eased himself off the bed (more a glorified mat of blankets than any bed) and stood near its edge. He still felt disoriented and needed its support as he tried to work through the jumbled thoughts that rambled through his head. He calmly let himself breathe first. It wouldn't do to panic at all, and Layton himself has woken up in strange places more than a few times in the past. Usually, it was from someone trying to impede him from his investigations.

But, everything was resolved back in London, wasn't it?

He decided to let go of that train of thought and instead study his surroundings. He tried the door. It opened easily enough to his touch.

"So, this place isn't a prison. Or, at least, they're not locking our doors." Layton rubbed his chin in thought and stopped mid-rub when he felt something cool slide past his knuckles. Layton walked over to the rickety, metal dresser in the side of the room. He picked up a small device with a glass like surface, examined every detail of its make. He held the device up to his neck and saw a silver loop of metal around his neck glisten harshly in the humming buzz of artificial white light. It had a number on it, one that seemed familiar. Layton opened his door again and found a match to the numbers on his collar. "This place does certainly try to mimic a prison. There isn't much to say on their hospitality." Layton took another sweeping glance around his room.

"Or their taste in decor, either."

A beep from the device in Layton's hand brought him out of his musings. There were messages on it, from what looked like other people. There was some relief in knowing he wasn't the only one caught here.

Layton went back to his bed and sat on it, holding his device in front of him. The whole situation and the growing unease he felt from reading the posts reminded him of something Emmy once said. And it now seemed quite apt for the situation.

"This reminds me of a puzzle...from an insane asylum."

[Voice]

[A clipped, English voice echoes from the communicator.]

Hm? What a curious contraption. I would like to see how it works, but ah...

Oh, excuse me. It seems to be recording, isn't it? My name is Hershel Layton, though those that know me refer to me as Professor Layton.

Assuming there is anyone from my London here at all, of course. [Layton has read a few posts and seems to slowly realize the predicament he is in. He still doesn't fully grasp his status as 'Lab Rat'. Not yet.

Layton clears his throat.]

I've read a little bit of the happenings, but I'd like to ask if anyone is willing to divulge more information. That would be extremely helpful and I believe it would be nice to speak to someone personally in these unfamiliar circumstances.

...And if anyone has heard of anyone named Flora Reinhold or Luke Triton, that is very important to me as well. [Layton silently hopes that the children aren't here.]

Yes, well, that will be all from me for now. Thank you.

This game includes horrible mental and physical torture of your character. After reading the rules/faq for clarification, how do you expect your character to handle this and continue to function?

Layton is a firm believer in 'keeping calm and carrying on.' No matter how odd, stressful or dangerous a situation gets, Layton remains unflappable in his calmness. There's really only been one scene in the entire first trilogy of games where Layton has allowed his composure to crack and that was when the love of his life went back to her own time to die again. If anything were to truly upset Layton, it would be horrible things being done to other people rather than himself. He'd find strength in trying to solve the mysteries surrounding the facility and helping other cope as well.

Questions? Comments? Crazed and creative statements? Those go here. You know, this application reminds me of a splendid puzzle...
