Chapter 1: Night of the Funeral
Part 3: Search and Rescue

When we last left off, Flint was rushing home to see if Hinawa and the kids had made it back safely.

Our path is blocked!
By a bird!

It's a letter from Hinawa.

My father seems sad to say goodbye to his grandchildren after seeing them for the first time in so long, but we should be home by this evening.

I had forgotten how nice and refreshing the mountain air is. You're always covered in the smell of sheep back in Tazmily village, so I really wish you could have been here to take in this air.

The next time we visit, let's ask one of our neighbors to tend to the sheep so we can all come up here as a family.

Claus, Lucas and I were always thinking about you. When we get home this evening, I'll start cooking some of your favorite Omelets right away.

With love, your dearest Hinawa

As one might suspect, they're not home.

FUEL
I'll go find them!

ISAAC
They're probably taking shelter from the rain somewhere. It's getting late, so we should all look for them. Let's get the other villagers to help, too.

FUEL
Okay. I'll go tell my dad, then.

BONEY
(Please take me with you. I'm sure I'll be helpful.)

Take Boney with you?

[Yes No]

BONEY
Woo-woof!
(Woo-woof!)

[Boney joined your party.]

As it turns out, Boney is a more valuable ally than either of the two human beings who have helped me this chapter. He can actually take real actions!
His special ability, Sniff, allows him to determine the weaknesses of enemies.

Fueled by concern for our family, we head out to join up with the rest of the village. Talking to some villagers, it would seem that everyone is meeting at the Prayer Sanctuary.

JONEL
I asked everyone to split up and search the forest for Hinawa.
You've been blessed with kind friends. That must be true happiness, in one sense.

The path deeper into the forest is full of poisonous snakes. Fortunately, if you go to Isaac's house, you can get an unlimited number of antidotes. I take six - three for Flint, and three for Boney.

As in Earthbound, if you sneak up on an enemy from behind on the world map, you can get a surprise attack in on them.

A bit farther in...

BRONSON
These huge trees were snapped right in two. How could such big trees get ripped down like this?
There's one thing for sure. Whatever did this, it wasn't human... and no, it wasn't me!
What do we do now? They have the path completely blocked.

JACKIE
Actually, Hinawa and the kids might still be stuck out there, because of all these knocked-down trees blocking the way.

BRONSON
Even if it's not the most direct path, we should look for another way around...

BATEAU
It's probably best if we split up into a few groups.

ISAAC
Hey!

BRONSON
Lighter?! Are you sure you're in good enough shape to be out here?

LIGHTER
I'm always in good shape. Don't treat me like some injured clod!

All right, let's start looking for another way around, like they man says.

JONEL
See those claw marks? Those most certainly belong to a Drago. But why would a Drago claw at stuff like this, enough to leave gashes in a rock, even? They're such peaceful creatures...
I get the feeling something very bad is happening to the forest, the peoples, the animals, and me...

Then, on the way back, Boney smells something...

JONEL
Flint! I think Boney found something!

BATEAU
Oh! Look up there! There's a scrap of cloth! Don't you see? There's a bit of red, right over there...

WESS
What is it? Is there something on the top of this cliff?

JONEL
Sorry to say, but there's nothing a rickety old man can do to help us out.

Or is there?

WESS
Oh... Flint. Don't tell me you intend to climb this cliff? I know how you feel, but scaling this cliff face is just too dangerous.
But, you know, maybe my son could be of use. I don't know if it will help any, but let's get him here so he can try. I'll need to borrow Boney for a bit.

WESS
My son't name is...

And a new character enters our story!

WESS
His name is Duster. Got that? Here, have a sniff of his sock... Gaahh... that's ripe....
D-don't forget this smell, now.

BONEY
*whimper*
(Gaahh... that's ripe, all right...)

WESS
I've tied a yellow ribbon to your collar. Show him the ribbon, and he'll know exactly what's going on!
Now fetch!

BONEY
Woof woof!
(You can count on me!)

Boney is a badass dog.

WESS
Duster... at long last, it is time to put the thief skills you've studied since childhood to the test. Now, show us your Wall Staple Technique! Right here, right now!

DUSTER
I did study that technique, but this is my first time using it for real...
I hope this works...
This area looks scalable here.

Duster is also a badass. Let's follow him.

After we climb up, Duster joins our party. He's not as strong as Flint, but his Thief Tools are incredibly useful.

Once atop the cliff, we take the scrap of Hinawa's dress, and save our game.
