Here's what I need: as many Americans as possible to comment on here to reassure me that America has not gone completely and utterly insane ( Read more... )

I saw this on the news around 3am and to be frank my flabber was fully ghasted. I really *really* couldn't believe that they'd turn suicide into some cobbled together reason for war.

And... frankly I'm sickened that the UK are still allied so strongly to a government that would say something like that, and even *have* camps like Guantanamo (because lets not forget it is not the only camp where "prisoners" are held indefinately and without trial). The UK government should be talking some bloody sense into the US government and I'm appalled that it isn't.

*breathes*

Yes it should. Aargh. But on the bright side one of our Ministers did have the guts to say:

"If it's perfectly legal and there's nothing going wrong there - well, why don't they have it in America and then the American court system can supervise it?"

Why indeed.

I want photos of your ghasted flabber btw. It sounds educational! :)

On the subject of ghasted flabbers... apparently it is spelt "flabbergasted"... Seems someone out there decided that the 'h' from aghast was unneccessary (just like the US government! BOOM BOOM!!!)

You get no disagreement from me that the Bush admin is pure evil incarnate and that they have done many many illegal things not only against foreign nationals, but against US citizens. Many of us are not happy at all about this prison and have been calling the government to start criminal prosecution here in the states and get the ball rolling for either acquittal or sentencing. I swear there are, but we get silenced way fast. What can I say, I have a corrupt government and the only opposition to the Republicans is a party so weak they are barely functioning.

Well I wish I could reassure you that America is not going "completely and utterly insane", but I'm quickly losing faith myself. With the damage the Bush Administration has caused over the last few years, we as a nation may very well never recover. I'd be relieved when it's time for elections in 2008, but then again the next one could be even worse considering the Democrats don't have anyone of merit to put up against the Republicans. Honestly, get some balls, people! It's embarrassing.

Three suicides are "An act of war"? I have no words. Nothing would do justice to this kind of ignorance.

By the way, I'd like to 'friend' you, if you don't mind... :)

What "nation" did the terrorists in London, or the terrorists in Spain represent ( ... )

Rod, I knew you'd say something like this, so yes I'll take it as conversational. :)

My main annoyance in this instance is more to do with the idea that terrorists are incapable of just committing suicide out of despair after being kept in prison for three years. As if terrorists were less capable of despair than normal mass murderers, rapists, or drug addicts. I think that's something you can probably understand (if not agree with). :)

Oh absolutely I understand what you are saying, and I do agree. However, in this instance, with 3 at the same time, I can't help but wonder is it was some kind of cordinated statement.
Given the tenor of the commanders WHOLE statement, and the hysteria on the other side, I think the real answer lies somewhere in the middle, which surprisingly enough is where I usually wind up. I will listen to discussions on the radio today, to try and draw more conclusions (I, unlike many of my liberal friends listen to both conservative and liberal commentators)

Just as a side note, where have you gotten the impression that prisoners routinely commit suicide from despair?

Thank you for taking this discussion correctly, sometimes it's difficult in writing to come across correctly :D

I don't know about routinely, but certainly when people do manage to commit suicide in prison - which does happen at least a couple of times a year, at least in the UK - it tends to be put down to depression (despair/hopelessness/ life isn't worth it any more etc and all that goes with it) rather than to plain awkwardness.

I'm also not entirely convinced that suicide as an act of war (other than in the process of killing others) is accepted in Islam, particularly among the more extreme branches. I'll have to look into it.

M - I understand you are upset and I actually sent lunalovepotter over to make a comment b/c she keeps up with politics and news WAY more than I do (well, I barely do at all so I guess most people fall under that category). While I generally lean on the opposite scale as geezer, I have to say that the tone of this post (more than the content) sort of offends me. I guess it's the use of the terms, "dimwits", "imbeciles", and mere "life-forms" in such sweeping generalizations to those of us who are Americans and darn proud too, that it's hard to get past that and actually want to try to answer your question (if you really want it answered).

If you just want to rant, that's your prerogative too however a anti-U.S. warning and an LJ-cut would be helpful for those of us who may not wish to pick up on phrases here and there as we scroll our friends list. Again, maybe I'm totally wrong here but I just had to mention it anyway. Thanks.

I'm replying on this comment just because I second the harsh generalizations used. Please never trust newspapers or news venues in general!! They tend to be horrendously biased and often misinformed ( ... )

Just to add to this (if I may) I found the whole statement made by the commander of the base, and in context it makes sense rather than being the ravings of an idiot.

Also I would like to say to ablueskier, that while this is perhaps the third thing I have read that you have written, you stike me as one of the most level-headed, rational people I have had the pleasure of reading opinions from any where on LJ.

Sorry Andrea, I intended the dimwits etc to be taken purely as addressed towards the particular Americans involved in this sort of thing, not towards all Americans in general - I know you lot are all intelligent people. :)
