One of the students -- a girl named Katie Bell -- was put under the Imperius Curse, a spell that makes the affected into slaves of its caster. She was then given a cursed object during one of the student trips to Hogsmeade. It brushed her skin and it sent in her into her a terrible fit of shrieking, writhing pain.
She's at St. Mungo's now. From what I understand, she will need time to recover, but she will be fine.
No one seems to have any clues as to who could have cast the spell. For the moment, I am merely glad she did not do more than brush the object...the consequences could have been much worse.
Even though Severus has already told me what Draco's planning, Draco has an alibi, probably deliberately so. Which begs the question of who he is using as an ally...or who he's already put under the Imperius Curse.
