“Laura,” James peeked his head into the living room and smiled down at the blond girl seated before the television set. She didn’t even look up at the call of her name, not showing any acknowledgment in the least. Either she was too entranced by her cartoons, or she was ignoring him because she already knew why he was there. “Laura… it’s time for bed.”
“No it’s not.”
James resisted the urge to chuckle. Laura was still as bratty as ever. After adopting her, James had promised himself he wouldn’t spoil her, but found out that that was exactly what he had done in the end. Of course she knew what time it was (there was a clock right above the Tv), but was just trying to stall for some more time, even if her “no it’s not” argument only got her five extra minutes.
“It’s. Time. For. Bed,” the twenty-nine year old man said, picking the blond child up and holding her bridal style. He ignored her insults and pleads for “only until this episode is done” and continued into her room.
Without warning, Laura was dumped unto her soft bed and had her school clothes being thrown on the floor. Before she knew it, James had already gotten her pajamas on her. Somewhere along the line, James had already gotten her under the covers as well. Laura sat up in bed and pouted, arms crossed and everything. She heard a chuckle come from above and found herself smiling too.
“Love you,” James whispered, leaning down to repeatedly brush his nose against Laura’s smaller one. She giggled and brushed back, then dropped her head back against her pillow. “Sleep tight.” He added, shutting off the light.
Only after he had left did Laura mumble an “I love you” back.
