“Do you love me?”
“No.”
“Do you like me?”
“No.”
“Do you dislike me?”
“No.”
“Do you hate me?”
“Yes.”
Sullivan was silent for a moment, probably thinking of more stupid questions to ask. For once, the blond man wasn’t smiling. Instead, his lips were in a fine line. Had Henry hurt his feelings? Oh, poor thing, Henry thought bitterly. Kills twenty-one people and finds out someone hates him.
Then finally: “Could you ever love me?”
Henry allowed himself to smile. The expectant look on Walter’s face was just too much. Maybe he could humor the guy... It would be so easy to say yes and maybe, for once, allow some happiness into Sullivan’s life.
So easy to be merciful and say yes.
“No.”
But Henry wasn’t in a merciful mood.
“That’s incorrect,” Sullivan said quickly, rising from the chair he had previously been seated in. “You could most certainly love me, you’re just not willing to try. What I did to you - to miss Galvin and the rest of them - I did for love. Mother’s love. And even for your love.”
Henry watched as Sullivan pointed a finger at him. “You will love me,” the Assumption said in slightly deeper voice than usual. Nodding to himself, Sullivan walked out of room 302, mumbling softly - “in time, of course... but you will.”
The door closed with a soft click. Of course, had Henry really believed Walter would harm his “mother” by slamming the door? Even more so, no matter how mad, Walter never let his anger show through. Except for that one time Henry called him a “sick son of a bitch”.
Once Henry was sure the other male was gone, he stood from his own seat and glanced out the window. “You’re wrong,” the brunette murmured. “I definitely can’t.”
