I've just rejoined
legendland, and this battle they're doing a series of episode rewatch activities. You can make icons, gifs, write fanfiction etc, based on the episode assigned for that challenge. I'm choosing to do a live blog review/recap/reaction post for this week, and it's probably what I'll do for the next assignments as well.
My rating of Prohecy and Destiny: 2 (on a scale of 1-5, 1 being the best)
Disclaimer: All gifs stolen from talented tumblrites. Mostly frompillow. What, like I would recap something without gifs?
I remember the first time I watched Prophecy and Destiny. At the time I thought it was a little dense - which is understandable, considering how much world building they had to do. It doesn't strike me as dense anymore, but that's probably because of how my love for the show has grown.
I remember when I first watched Seeker, before I got really involved in fandom, I -believe it or not- shipped R/K like anything. I loved Richard, I loved Kahlan, I loved Zedd, I loved Dragon Corp Soldier #3. But in the early days of fandom I got really turned off R/K by the hostility surrounding them - the commandment of you must love Kahlan, you must ship R/K, or we will get our torches and pitchforks. It wasn't until a year after the show ended that I softened toward Kahlan again, thanks in large part to
evilgmbethy and the collaboration fic we did for R/K. But watching the show from the beginning again, as I haven't in so long - I remember how excited I was, how much I loved everything.
The show is so marvelously pretty. I was hooked from the very first scene. I still have a strange aversion to the actress that plays Dennee - I like the second one that comes around in S2, but the S1 actress. I don't know, her face just bothers me, though I have realized that it isn't the character of Dennee I don't like. I just don't like the actress' face for reasons I can't fathom.
Oh, and now Richard is building a bridge, and I find myself overflowing with Richard love. And not just because of those abs. I spend so much time in fandom advocating for Darken Rahl, that I guess people don't realize I also love Richard. Let me dispel that right now, I LOVE RICHARD.
There are so many little things I'd forgotten about this. I love how Richard takes a bite of his apple, and then feeds the bite to his horse. I am totally remembering that and making him do that in a fic at some point. And oh, now he's trying to protect Kahlan! With his little chu face. *Chus at Richard*
And then our first confession - the thunder, the hair, the swirling eyes. I got goosebumps the first time. And then Rannsen Fayne says "Confessor" and you know what she is and just. Ahhhh I'm feeling so much R/K love right now. And I'm wondering about an AU in which Kahlan confessed Richard the first time she saw him, because she isn't used to people touching her and she perceived him as a threat. Someone who isn't me, do this.
angstbunny ?
hrhrionastar ? Come oonnnnnnnnnn.
Skipping ahead to Zedd - UNF ZORANDER, YOU ARE SUCH A BEAST. He was definitely one of my favorite characters throughout the show. There is so much meat to Zedd that isn't readily apparent until later episodes, but in the beginning he serves the very delightful "Joxer Function". I just. This show you guys. I'm sitting here loving everything, and remembering all these moments I'd forgotten since I tend to only watch the Jennsen and/or Darken Rahl episodes usually, but there is just not a thing I don't like about this show. This show is just so quality. Never has a fantasy adventure show been more absolutely perfect - fun and emotional, visually evocative, with something for everyone. Blood, and gore, and magic, and love, hatred, family drama, PEOPLE ON HORSES.
Loling to death over Richard being all WHAT? ZEDD? BUT HE'S CRAZY!
I bet if you asked him at the end of S2, he'd still be like WHAT? ZEDD? BUT HE'S CRAZY. HE MAKES UP HIS LESSONS AS HE GOES, I SAW HIM MISCOUNT.
And Zedd's just all: WHATEVER BOY, I'M FABULOUS.
And OH OH OH. THINGS THAT I SEE DIFFERENTLY NOW:
Kahlan asks Zedd why he stayed near Richard all these years, if it wasn't because he knew the Seeker would one day be needed. At first blush, you think she's right, that Zedd knew one day that he would need to Name the Seeker. But now we know that Zedd is Richard's grandfather and T_T . And you wonder why Zedd didn't keep him - but he did such a fail!parenting job with Taralyn, he's probably afraid of screwing up Richard. Someone stop me before I start writing 298347293874 more chapter fics about everything. >_>
Also very interesting - Zedd says that Darken Rahl may be some evil wraith risen from the underworld. Now in a way, this foreshadows Darken's deal with the Keeper, but it also says so much about Zedd, who we find out later is the reason that Darken could be conceived. I wonder if Bruce Spence knew the whole time.
And oh, Zedd you are killing me - the look of anguish on his face when Richard is able to read The Book of Counted Shadows.
LOL RICHARD YOU HAVE SUCH HILARIOUS WTF FACES.
Kahlan's all:
You are the one true Seeker, you fill me with such HOPE.
And Richard's all:
And T_T
Zedd: My boy!
Richard: I'm NOT your boy!
Just. ZEDDICUS. LET ME HOLD YOU.
And you know what, I find I'm really interested in Michael Cypher this time around. I used to dismiss him, like
But now I'm seeing a lot of parallels with Darken Rahl, and I think I want to explore that. How interesting it is, that every time Richard has a brother, he seems to be loved more, or at least the brother feels that way.
Interesting too, that Zedd seems to have burned his hand by using Wizard's Fire after two decades. Also I forgot that gars hunt by using blood flies.
Also LOL ZEDD YOU ARE SUCH A TROLL.
Kahlan: He's got the sword! And the book!
Zedd: Isn't that exactly what you wanted? *TROLOLOLOLOLOL*
And now George is dying, and Michael is blaming Richard and I'm just soooo interested in Michael you guys. If we can have sympathy for Darken Rahl, why not Michael Cypher? Where's the Michael love? BRB, making a Michael comm. No not really. Ok, maybe, LOL NO NOT REALLY. Or maybe.
Also for some reason I'm shipping Michael/Kahlan now. I don't know why. It doesn't even make sense. They barely interact. I'm just. Michael/Kahlan, I would be interested to see it. Ooh, maybe a love triangle, where R/K stay in Hartland for a while, and Michael loves Kahlan too, but it's all ~unrequited and another reason for Michael and Richard to have brother issues and yeeessss.
Richard's Brothers: Having Richard Issues Since Forever.
Also, you have to hand it to CH. I really can't see anyone else as Richard. He has such expressive eyes, and such great emotional range. He gets sort of shunted to the side with all the love for Kahlan, Cara, and Darken Rahl, but you know in the end, CH is the star of the show, and it wouldn't have worked if he wasn't phenomenal. GO CH, BB. GO. Also, I like it when he's on a horse.
Awww, you know I forgot about Chase's family, and his daughter asking R/K if they were married. And the scene on the porch with R/K, which is just BEAUTIFUL like everything else in this show. And oh, Kahlan. The tears in her eyes when she tells Chase and his wife that they have a lovely family. You don't know it the first time you watch the episode, but you just know that she'll never have this - or at least at the time she thinks she won't. And just the intense emotion of the conversation and R/K are looking at each other all ~soulfully and I'm like:
ALSO. JUST. SO MANY ZEDD FEELINGS. T_T
Richard: But I've lost everything.
Zedd: Not everything. You have me...
Also, Lolz Rahlsies sitting up in bed all THE SEEKER. HE LIVES.
Do I even need to say anything at this point about Darken Rahl? HERE, IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW, MY REACTION TO DARKEN RAHL:
AND ZEDD. BEING ALL BEASTLY. SAVING RICHARD FROM THE SHADOW PEOPLE IN THE BOUNDARY. BEAST ZEDD GOTTA BEAST, HE DON'T KNOW NO OTHER WAY.
Adie the Bone Lady is very fun. Her and her inability to use pronouns.
Also, this will forever be one of my favorite lines from the whole show. Chase is all amazed, and he says "If I believed in fairy tales, I'd say I just saw my friend Richard Cypher slay a dragon." <- That's just so iconic of the whole adventure to me. We go from this world where there is no magic, to this sudden great adventure - Richard finds himself the hero of a fairy tale, when yesterday he was only a woodcutter's son. God I am loving Richard so much right now.
Also, I love Chase. I forget about him a lot. But I love Chase. <- Like this is news. I love everyone.
Skipping ahead to the final scene, because the deadline for the challenge is running out (I'm a bit late, since I just rejoined LL), have to say - GORGEOUS. The fighting, the random slow mo, the music, the green glow of the Boundary and the fire. Just a really beautiful, moving scene. My heart is uplifted. Really. This scene is giving me ALL THE FEELINGS. I'm not even coherent about it. There is just so much darkness and danger hanging over them, and you can feel it in this scene, but more than that you can feel their determination, and hope, and the love that isn't fully formed but the promise of it is there and I can't even.
In conclusion, rewatching this reminds me how much I love the heroes of the show, just as much as the villains. And I do, in fact, ship R/K. I'm just much less interested in them in fanart and fanfic, because we get so much of their relationship on the show that I don't really feel the need for more, if that makes sense. The show already did it, and it was perfect. Now I'd rather explore relationships we got glimpses of, but didn't really get to see.
Here, this video sums up my feelings about the pilot pretty well:

To be honest, I really want to keep watching, but I won't. I'll wait for the next assignment so the next episode is fresh when I watch it. FFFFFF I love this show so intensely. BRB, crying forever that it's over.
