You guys did a great job with the questions last week so sit back and enjoy this wonderful interview with:

Prison Break Fan Fic author circus_sands

From alazysod:

How do you feel about the premise for S3?

A little confused, not going to lie. I have no idea what they’re planning in terms of this genetic research thing (typing that makes me go “wtf”, seriously), but the idea of Mahone and Michael in prison together (and possibly joined by T-Bag) is so excellent. As long as Mahone or T-Bag is in the third season it has to be at least semi-decent. So I’m optimistic.

What character inspired you to start writing PB fic?

T-Bag, no question. He’s so awful and complicated, and very different from anything I’d ever been exposed to in a movie, TV show, book, etc. He’s a character you think you have pegged from the beginning, but there’s a lot more to him I think. I liked the nuances of his character, and for some reason I liked his mentality, because he wasn’t like OMGSOCRAZY; he was very smart in a very twisted way. In the first season T-Bag was a huge part of the show, just because everybody had some reaction to him, whether they loved him or hated him.

When you get an idea, do you begin writing immediately, or do you mull it over for a couple of days? Does your writing process ever change?

I definitely have to mull it over for a while. A scene or interaction or a character’s thought is usually what occurs to me first, it never starts with plot. And then things just grow from there. Sometimes my fics are fairly episodic, because I like writing isolated scenes as they occur to me, and that seem to be able to stand on their own but as a whole form a better picture of a character. My writing process doesn’t usually change, but my style does. I had this total love for second person for a while, and now, for the most part, I can’t stand it. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it most definitely does not!

What is your opinion of sharks?

OMG best question ever. (If you are confused, it’s a joke we have thanks to this hilarious little page.)

Do you have a preferred genre?

I don’t really know, actually. I tend to like gen, just because slash and Michael/Sara is so overdone. Slash, when it’s plausible, is never a bad thing though. Unless it’s graphic Michael/Lincoln, and then it’s just kind of wrong. And I’m always up for good humor fic, which are sadly rare.

Which fic are you must proud of? Why?

I’d have to say Spare Parts, Broken Up because I worked on that forever. I don’t even remember when I started it. And I’d just write bits and pieces whenever a new scene occurred to me. There were entire weeks when I didn’t even look at it, so it went very slowly, but the goal wasn’t to finish it super quickly anyway. I was also really careful with it. I think Mahone is a fascinating character but there is a lot left unsaid or that we never saw, so I invented things the way I thought they might have, or at least could have, gone. There’s also a way William Fichtner plays Mahone that is very consistent, so it was not an overwhelming problem trying to write the character or figure out his voice, although it was definitely hard. I think what’s also important and that a lot of people miss is that Mahone is, when it comes down to it, a fairly regular person in a way that (for example) Michael or T-Bag just aren’t. I mean, I’m a teenage girl from Manhattan, I have literally nothing in common with that character, but there are still a few qualities of his that are definitely recognizable and even relatable.

From happywriter06:

How do you get inside the head of T-bag?

Well, secretly I’m a serial killer, so it wasn’t too hard...? Okay sorry, kidding. Honestly, it just involves finding a voice for the character and a perspective you don’t necessarily have to relate to, but that you can understand. I think RK is amazing, and the way he says some (all?) of those lines makes T-Bag’s voice really distinctive and immediately recognizable. I guess writing a character is similar to an actor playing a character, because you have to figure out your character’s motivations and how he sees the world, regardless of whether you can relate to it or not. Some people have such issues writing characters they feel they can’t immediately relate to, but that seems to be all I do… It’s not very fun otherwise.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what five fics would you want with you?

I’m assuming you mean of other people’s… Seriously, I don’t know. ”alazysod” has written some amazing ones, too many to list, and I remember reading Pragmatism by ”callmetofu” during the PBFE and being really glad someone had written T-Bag well. It had been a while. But uh, that’s all I can think of at the moment.

Favorite character. Least favorite.

Favorite has got to be Mahone, definitely. I love what they did with the character and I love how William Fichtner plays him. I think it’s possible that character wouldn’t be as compelling if he wasn’t played by that actor. T-Bag used to be my favorite, but he’s gone down a peg this past season. Talk about character inconsistency, I mean, really. Least favorite would have to be Bellick, who I just hate. Of the escapees, probably Haywire, just because I think he’s kind of boring.

Are you ever tempted to write things outside of your comfort zone?

Sure, I’ve been tempted to write slash a few times. I did it once with T-Bag and an invented character, but it was very slight. My problem with the other characters is making it plausible. It’s a bit awkward, I mean, I can’t just throw the fact that Michael is really quite straight (and in love with Sara) out the figurative window. The same goes for Mahone. T-Bag is the easiest to slash, for obvious reasons (namely that he slashes himself with everything in sight anyway). The idea of Lincoln not being straight is actually hilarious. Frankly I think I could write Michael/Mahone, it would just be a bitch to do because they are both so straight (and plus, they kind of hate each other). Well actually, Mahone’s straight, but he’s Michaelsexual.

From bluedelft:

If you could travel one place in the world where would you go?

I just got back from Paris two weeks ago, and I’d go back in a heartbeat. I love it there. I’d like to see more of France though, and I’d like to go back to Italy. And I’d like to take a road trip around the U.S. because it’s such a big country and I want to see it all.

Do you have a favorite book that you've read over and over again? What about a favorite author?

I had lots of favorite books that I reread over and over again growing up. I don’t do that so much anymore. The one I’ve read portions of more than once is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I love that book. I read The Hours by Michael Cunningham on my own and just recently read it again for school, and I’ve seen the movie like four times so it feels like I’ve read it over and over again. My favorite authors include the two I just mentioned, as well as Chuck Palahniuk, Evelyn Waugh, Vladimir Nabokov, Stephen Fry, and Somerset Maugham.

What character do you find the easiest to write and which one is the hardest?

I’ve sort of written everybody, but the two I write most are T-Bag and Mahone. (Even though I’ve technically only written Mahone twice, but that last fic I wrote may as well have been like, five smaller fics in one, okay.) That said, I don’t really know which are easiest or hardest. Nothing necessarily comes easily, except T-Bag’s voice. I don’t really like writing characters that are very easy to pin down. I imagine writing Michael/Sara would be difficult just because it’s complicated, but not in the good way. At least, for me. There’s a lot of tension and a lot going on that isn’t said, but for some reason I just don’t find it that interesting at all. It’s another difficult, strained relationship between a guy and a girl. I also have a hard time with Michael. I love him but trying to write him can sometimes be strangely boring. He’s not a cardboard character of course, and he is extremely multilayered and smart and complicated, but I feel like I can see him on the show and understand his character, and not feel any need to write about him.

Do you have a favorite scene that you find yourself watching over and over again?

I do love the scene between T-Bag and Abruzzi in the shack in S1 because there is so much going on there. And I love the PI scenes because they are hilarious. In S2 I love the scene when Pam calls Mahone in his car before he goes off to find the brothers and their dad and Sucre. I also liked the bits in the map episode when Michael, Lincoln, and T-Bag are together because they’re fun in that scenario. And I thought the last scene with Michael and Sara in the shack (why is everything always in a damn shack) was really moving and wonderfully acted.

What inspired your first PB fic? Was it a scene, a comment made by someone or maybe a prompt or challenge?

I’m pretty sure my first PB fic was a T-Bag drabble, and in that case then yeah, that’s because of Tom Waits. For real. I’d just heard his album Mule Variations and I was like, “hey wow, this is like legit Deep South and his voice is amazing” and I really listened to some of the lyrics and they seemed to really mesh with this brand new character T-Bag. So, thank Tom Waits. Bizarre, but true.

What is your favorite donut? With all of the donut drabbles and Pam suggesting this question here it is!

Haha umm, I have no favorite donut. I like glazed Krispy Kremes, but that phrase alone makes me feel like I just gained ten pounds.

From antoine_baros:

Describe the process you go through when you write a fic, from having the original idea to posting.

I’ll get the original idea, mull it over for a while, write a portion of it, go back to it some amount of time later when I feel like it, and edit and add. And once I have a substantial amount or if I’m not sure where to go with it, I’ll send it to ”alazysod” to beta it. And once she’s done that I’ll go back, edit and rewrite and add, ponder any suggestions for how to move the thing forward, and eventually I finish it. And once I’ve finished it I give it a day, look over it again, and post it if it’s done.

Is writing more a hobby or a need to you?

It’s a hobby. I get ideas for original things to write that aren’t Prison Break or related to any fandom, though. I do need to be able to write, but it’s more of a hobby for me.

From pamalax:

When did you get into a) Prison Break the show.... b) Prison Break fan fiction.

I got into Prison Break in March 2006, before it came back from its hiatus. ”alazysod” had been posting about it all over her journal and I’d seen it a few other places on my flist. I actually read a T-Bag/Maytag 50 sentences fic because she recced it and because I wanted to know what a “50 sentences fic” was. I had no idea who the characters were, and I definitely thought T-Bag was like a six-foot red-haired (don’t ask me why) tough guy who messed around in prison with some teenager named Maytag. I did not even get the “T-Bag” joke. And after hearing about it even more I thought “oh, why not give it a go.” So I watched the first episode, liked it, watched the second episode, and was immediately hooked. And I began to read fic sometime in April.

What about this show made you want to write PB fan fiction?

The characters, definitely. I liked all the possibilities. Although T-Bag was the only one I even felt I could attempt to write, at first.

Were you writing fic for other shows before PB and if so which shows.

Nope, hadn’t written fic since Harry Potter. Which was like, a year and a half before. Probably more than that.

Is there any story or character in the world of Prison Break you've yet to tell and are eager to get your hands on.

I don’t know, I’m sure there’s some Mahone thing I’ll want to address at some point but at the moment I haven’t thought of it yet. Or if I have, I’d rather not write it, simply because I just did a “deleted scenes” type of thing for him. I’d like to put certain characters in new situations. Possibly start on this whole Sona situation before there’s actual canon for it. I don’t really know yet!

What do you think is the hardest thing about writing Prison Break fan fic.

Coming up with plots, and keeping things canon for the sake of staying canon. The writers change things a lot, and sometimes they change certain characters in ways you don’t even notice until you try to write them yourself. I’ve had moments like that, though I can’t remember specifics. They probably mostly had to do with T-Bag. Also, if I’m writing something that is supposed to take place during what we see on the show (as in, not pre-series or AU), I tend to try to keep things as I’d see them on the show. So I don’t get overly graphic, and I like to create plausible situations. Although, if plot is important, I like to write things I know I would never see on the show in any way, shape, or form, because that’s fun too.

Look to your left, desk... wall, right now and tell us what it is you see there.

Uh… to my left I see my DVD of The Royal Tenenbaums, and Kafka’s The Metamorphosis because I just had to write an essay on it. There’s also my cell phone, my academic planner, and a lavender spice candle from Archipelago.

From foxriverinmate:

Season One or Season Two? And which season finale made the biggest impression on you?

Both seasons are so completely different that it’s hard to just choose between them, but I’d probably have to say Season One. There was so much going on and the prison dynamics were really interesting, and all the characters were in one place interacting with each other. That was definitely lost in Season Two which was unfortunate, plus like half the characters got killed which was sad. The addition of Mahone seems to be the one thing that kept a lot of people interested. I thought Season Two got much better towards the end, but I can’t figure out which season finale made the biggest impression. Probably the second one, because it gave me such a “wtf?” reaction and it was so open-ended. There was also a lot of emotion in it, from every character, and that was great. The first season finale made an impact on me mostly because of the hand thing, which totally distressed me because I hate limbs getting chopped off. But the way it ended was such an obvious cliffhanger, while the way the second one did was so unforeseen, and I have no idea what’s coming. So the second season’s finale is really the one that made the bigger impression.

Do you read and write the same pairings? Or do you read something different from what you write?

I pretty much read anything. I’ve read Michael/Sara but that’s usually what I avoid now because there’s so much of it and I feel like I’ve read all there is to read for it. Although I’ve been pleasantly surprised. If someone writes about a totally underrepresented character, like Sucre or C-Note, I’ll definitely read it. I’m more open about what I read than what I write though, mainly because something really has to get me if I’m going to write about it. The fact that I’ve written Prison Break fic at all is a testament to my interest in the show, because I watch a lot of shows and have read a few fics for other shows, but have never particularly felt the urge to write in any of those fandoms.
