so who's gonna watch you die?

Things have been looking up this past week. After a short bout of depression triggered by low self-esteem, working too much for too little, and just general existential crises, I am now happier than I probably have been in a while.

A good opening for my good mood was going to see Mother Courage and Her Children with Victoria in Central Park last Saturday. Seeing Meryl Streep on stage was simply amazing. That woman holds a complex performance high for a good solid three hours.

The next day was the regular move-in day for the NYU dorms, and both my roommate, Fred, and my other suitemate, Eddie, moved in. Everyone I'm living with is super nice, and I think this will be a good year living-situation wise.

And a good year in all things school-related, in fact. This week was Tisch Transfer Orientation. Apart from some things that were redundant for me as I had done them when I first got to NYU two years ago (including the President's Welcome, in which we were promised a speech from Alec Baldwin but got jipped...), many were brand new and exciting. The very first day was the Tisch Transfer Welcome Reception, which was basically a really sweet catered affair in which we all schmoozed and mingled and got loads of free stuff that says "Tisch" on it. My departmental orientation for film was fun as well, although more of an info-session than a party. I was able to get an appointment with an advisor, which went very well. We talked for more than an hour, and she told me that I actually have too many credits, so I don't have to worry about any non-film required classes. She said that for me "it's all gravy."

Although I saw Mary for the first time since last December, this week I've been hanging more with Tisch kids (especially film transfer students) than anyone. I've made some cool new friends. This week, we've done such things as perused Kim's video in the East Village, watched each others' films, and gone to Central Park to watch a free screening of Fatal Attraction (Glenn Close all cracked out? Um, I think YES...). Being the veteran NYUer, I've also given some of my wisdom to my newcomer friends. So far, I've introduced them to Macdougal Street and taught them the difference between Upstein and Downstein. More shall come.

I cannot wait to start classes next week. I feel more energised about school now than ever.
