Chapter 4: Crimson Augur of Memories

Yamada almost slam open his door as he walks in, swinging his bag on the chair before laying flat onto his bed. Exhausted he seems, he takes a deep breath, but frowns as he recognizes its familiarity.

“Why are you so harsh on her? She’s one of those who’re hard to come across.” said Chinen closing the door from behind.

He walks up to the window which gives a nice full image of the front garden of their dorm, “you’ll love it once you had a taste.”

“I’ve had enough.” said Yamada putting his arm on his forehead, as if trying to block out a piece of his mind.

Chinen turns back in doubt, “huh?”

“She was the one…”

She follows him silently from behind. Even just looking at his back gives a gentle and comforting feeling. What a mysterious presence she thinks.

“Is Yuto-kun going to be okay?” Her voice shivers as she speaks.

“He’ll be fine.”

The atmosphere carries on like that for a while until Yabu said the next line, “you know…” he keeps leading the way without looking at her, “most people don’t come here.”

She can see that he has on an unreadable expression, is it resentment? Or is it solitude? Perhaps it is neither? She can’t tell, but the eyes… they clearly show sentiment of some sort.

“I… got lost on the way back…” She said quietly.

“You ended up wandering to there? That’s quite impressive.” He said with a smile.

“Why’d you say that?”

“It’s rumoured that others often can’t find this place for some reasons, so for us who lives here, it’s a mystery to them. Away from everyone else, rarely show themselves around campus, the elites… it’s like a myth. Maybe the seventh wonders?”

“Do you not like people going there, senpai?”

A strange silent follows as they keep walking. Yabu did not answer to that question, he may still be searching for the answer. He doesn’t mind people coming at all, but should he not mind?

A gentle breeze blows from behind, bringing Kaiyu’s scent along with it as they keep walking. Yabu’s eyes sharpen at the smell of a scent other than that of the girl’s. He traces it back to her pocket, the corner of her handkerchief is visible on the edge.

“What’s that?” He pulls it out almost unnoticed by her.

“That’s… my handkerchief?” Unable to understand his question.

He flips several times until he finds a red dot on it, too awkward to be called its design or pattern. “I mean this.” He shows it to her.

Kaiyu looks at it for a second until a thought comes to mind, “Oh I remember, it should be Daiki’s. He had a nose bleed earlier today, might be left from then.

“Is something wrong?” She asks after Yabu stares at the stain for some time.

“No, not at all.” He holds the handkerchief up slightly, “mind if I keep it?”

Her head leans to a side, eyes gazing at her senior. “Sure… but why?…”

“Back to your question earlier,” Yabu keeps leading the way, casually shifting the topic of interest. “You shouldn’t come to Rose Garden that often.”

“Huh?” How strange she thinks, changing the subject that easily.

“It’s dangerous,” he winks at her and continues walking, “according to the others.” He adds.

Kaiyu halts, making Yabu turns around to see what happen, only to find her looking down on the ground, eyes cover by her bangs.

“Rose Garden…” she begins, “feels nostalgic…”

“I’m sorry…”

Takaki sighs as he pours another cup from a wine glass and sits beside Yuto on his bed.

He hasn’t say a word for what seems like years to Yuto. He knows he hate his poor health. Sometimes he even doubts if he can show his own fangs anymore…

“You know about your own health, you shouldn’t stay out for so long.”

“I’m sorry…” Yuto stares down in the cup filled with red liquid, thick and dense, a concentrated fluid it is, yet none of them stick onto the container. His reflection vividly shows from within.

He suddenly clutches his head in pain.

A long hallway… Two shadows falling in front of him… Slowly and repeatedly… His body motionless despite his strong will to run… A pair of bright scarlet eyes, blood dripping from the corner of his mouth…

“Stop it!”

He freezes at the scene surrounding him… A piercing pain burning from within, over taking his whole body… He can’t breathe… The thirst… His scream…

“No!”

The boy standing at the door, eyes widen when he sees him…

“No! Don’t go!” He yells helplessly but fails to fight against the throbbing to run after him…

“Come back!”

Help!… Stop it!… No!…

“Raiya!” He pants heavily. His quilt is dyed with his spilled drink, slowly dripping off the side of the bed. His mind empty, unable to recall what just happened, his sights wonder until they land on Takaki’s.

“Yuto are you alright?” Takaki shouts tightening his grip around his shoulders. “Who’s Raiya?”

Yuto looks at him expressionlessly, hasn’t a clue of what he just went through.

“I… don’t know…”

“You better get some sleep.” Said Takaki as he takes his empty cup away and lays him down in his bed, replacing the soiled quilt with a new clean one. “I’ll come see you later.”

Yuto stares at the plain ceiling cloth of his gothic style bed, the echo of the closed door rings clearly in his head.

Raiya…

Yabu looks surprised upon her statement. “Did she… remember? …”

“But not the place, just something about it… And for you too, have we met before? You seem rather familiar…”

“How would that be possible? This morning was the first time we met.” Yabu cuts her off with a smile, “feeling homesick already?” Putting his hands on her shoulders.

“Rest well tonight, you must be tired from the long day.”

Before Kaiyu realizes, they are already back to her dorm. When did we…

“Yabu-senpai, how did…” But when she turns around, he is nowhere to be found, leaving her with her big round eyes in their wonders.
